Unlike the cosmic one shot, I bought the first issue of this four issue mini not only for Daredevil but for Soule’s writing and Buffagni’s art. I also like the characters on Daredevil’s team here as I like Misty, Frank McGee, and Cypher, so while I don’t really care about whether they find Wolverine or not, I’m going to enjoy the trip along the way.

I thought this issue was a good start to the story. I really enjoy Soule’s voice for Daredevil, so the case notes by Matt were a real treat for me. I also thought Buffagni’s art and Charalampidis’ colors worked well together in setting up the night atmosphere. The only complaint I would have is that this issue is slow with very little action, but Soule said an interview that he’s trying to cram as many noir clichés as possible into this, so I was prepared for it to be slow going in. Otherwise I think it would have been a little off-putting. I’m interested to see what happens next issue.

Would anyone care to explain to me WHY ON EARTH would Matt (with his busy and complicated life) decide to waste his time, efforts and possibly even health in a search for that guy?

In universe it’s because Kitty asked Matt for help because the X-Men are short on investigators at the moment; Matt is Wolverine’s lawyer as shown in Wolverine and The X-Men. Out of universe, I presume it’s because Soule wanted to write a detective story with Matt, which is kinda funny since I think the second issue was much more horror than noir. Other than Frank’s romantic interest in Misty, things got pretty sinister rather quickly with all the killings in the wilderness. I hope that Cypher is somehow not dead even though he had his throat slit; he’s already died before and who knows how long it’d take him to come back again.

At the halfway point of this mini, I honestly don’t know what to think of it. It’s worth reading because of all the insight from Matt, but it’s not a must read so far, and given the tonal shift, I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next two issues. Wolverine doesn’t usually just go around casually killing people, so I don’t think it’s really him, but who knows at this point.

I've picked up the first two issues and, overall, I have enjoyed them.

Agree there was quite a bit of shift in the tone from the 1st to 2nd issue; however, I thought it worked.

While I don't have a huge interest in Wolverine I am certainly glad to see more of Matt each month and perhaps this may be a way to bring a few more readers on board considering it is being written by the guy who is all writing DD's main title.

Thank you for the answer, fellow DD fan. But I think just the "out of universe" option makes sense. Just marketing one more of Soule's foolish decisions on the character. DD does not owe Logan any damn thing (nor does he owe the X-men, for that matter). The few stuff we have in which the two of them interacted just showed Logan as the annoying arrogant piece of you know what he has always been. It would be way better to read an extra DAREDEVIL story, than this foolishness. But hey, it's contemporary Marvel; it's Soule --- I just wish this guy left the title already!

You're welcome, fellow DD fan!

The third issue continues the horror tone where most of it is a big fight scene with Albert, the cyborg Wolverine. Daredevil takes point in the battle and is supported by the rest of the team. I think Buffagni’s art really hit all the right notes as the fight was both easy to follow and engaging to read. I liked how Matt refused to run because he didn’t want Albert killing any more people and how he told Misty about when he barely won fighting against Wolverine back in Wolverine #24 (2003). It was a good little continuity nod that only added to the story.

I am very glad that Cypher lived, and I hope he gets his voice back eventually, although I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s not any follow up on that or on Frank and Misty’s romance in the finale. I admit I have no idea where Soule is going to go in the final issue. Obviously Matt, Misty, and Frank didn’t die in the building explosion, but I really doubt they are going to find Wolverine either. Why did that guy die in his apartment? Who set the bomb? Did they expect someone to come looking for the body or were they going to blow up the body anyway? Hopefully the finale answers some of these questions.

The fourth and final issue wasn’t what I thought it’d be. I was underwhelmed with the conclusion to the main plot and pleased with all the character interaction wrap up when I thought it’d be the other way around. Soule wrote some great teamwork in this finale, although it’s a little hard for me to buy that this team was that scared of four guys in SWAT gear as that seems like the kind of threat Matt can easily take out himself. Tonally I think it was still horror given all the gore. And it’s hilarious that Matt made Foggy watch the murder footage. I hope he at least warned him or something.

But the big idea here that the shocking discovery of the team is that Wolverine is an amoral killer again is ridiculous. It’s just so silly because even if Wolverine isn’t in his right mind now or something, that’s who he’s always been: “I’m the best at what I do, and what I do isn’t very nice.” Now, I don’t mind Matt being shocked because as his lawyer of course he’s gotten to know Wolverine a little, and he’s going to feel bad about this turn of events. That’s fine. But for me as a reader, it’s like okay, so what? It’s just not enough of a revelation to make up for the falling action here. I think Soule would have been better served swapping the major plot events in issues three and four in order to make a more exciting climax for this story. Ooh, Wolverine is back from the dead and eviscerating people. What’s next, we find out The Punisher kills criminals?

Overall, I liked this mini, I don’t regret buying it (I wouldn’t for the art alone as Buffagni does wonderful work in this story), and I do think there’s enough Daredevil content here to be worth reading on its own for him alone. But just as I didn’t buy the Hunt for Wolverine one shot leading into this mini, I doubt I’ll be picking up Dead Ends unless I hear something that indicates I need to for Matt because this “shocking” hook of killer Wolverine simply isn’t interesting or Daredevil-centric enough to keep going.

The Solicits for Daredevil seemed to suggest that this was required reading. I'm glad I didn't end up getting it because it isn't. I'll probably check it out eventually, but I didn't need to rush to read it.

While it's not really required reading, the ongoing title picks up right where this ends. I enjoyed the story overall, and the artwork was really good in my opinion. I'm glad I picked it up. I would have anyways, but sometimes there's buyer's regret... not this time, it was worth my time and money.
