The meeting with Frank McGee brought me a chuckle with the reference to a Dazzler song getting stuck in someone's head. I like the idea of bringing him into this world to investigate this. He's Soule's character, so that helps and maybe, just maybe, he can avoid getting killed in Death of the Inhumans.

Speaking of killed, wasn't Hammerhead killed in Defenders or am I misremembering that? I guess the whole thing needed to be Hammerhead so they could go with the whole nail gun shtick. The way it turned out was interesting. Daredevil certainly went a long way, but I like the idea of New Yorkers saving themselves. I like that he couldn't have done something if a civilian hadn't also took matters into his own hands.

I'm not sure what to make of the twist, though. At first, I was going to point out that I recently read Fathoms of Humanity where Matt is now Jack Battlin' doing this exact thing. Between the two characters, Jack Battlin' is much more likely to go undercover to a seedy bar than Mike Murdock would. But then we find out things aren't what they seem there at all. I do wonder if Reader read something about Mike Murdock. Either way, the tonal shift was very abrupt. Even ignoring Mike himself, the book got suddenly campier as well.

This issue feels difficult to judge without knowing where it's going. It's cheating to say I'm not giving it a score until it's all done so I'll go Four Stars, but that could fluctuate wildly as it goes on.

After I picked up this issue today, I read through it pretty quickly, and I didn't know what to make of the Mike Murdock reveal at the end. I was wondering if Peter Parker or Danny Rand was dressed up as Daredevil. After turning it around in my brain, I also wondered whether the Reader had read something about Mike Murdock, and he became real.

Is this the first appearance of the Reader, or has he shown up in Soule's Inhumans run prior to this? I'm curious to see what the Reader does in future issues. As it stands now, I hope his other senses aren't heightened so he doesn't start treading into our hero's territory. Perhaps they aren't, because he has to have his dog Forey around for a reason.

I'm wondering what was gained by going back and forth between Hammerhead's heist and the meeting with McGee. It may have been done for its own sake, but, fortunately, both were done well. I liked the nail gun, and I liked all the screens. I enjoyed Phil Noto's art, especially the splash page where Daredevil addresses the crowd at the bank. If you haven't checked out Noto's Black Widow run with writer Phil Edmonson, you're missing out.

I like the idea of this investigative team working to brink Fisk down, and how organized they're being. I imagine Soule is drawing a clear allusion to the Mueller investigation, and I'm more than fine with that. (I also read some current affairs references into Daredevil's speech at the bank. I don't think Soule supports the current White House administration.)

Freddy KillKallen's wife looked a lot like Carrie-Anne Moss, who plays Jeryn Hogarth in the Netflix shows. I'm wondering if that was intentional, or I could be off the beam.

There was a touching three page tribute to the recently deceased Steve Ditko at the front of this issue. The only other Marvel comic I picked up this week was The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and the same tribute was there, so I imagine it was in every Marvel comic released this week. Perhaps the Book Club should pay a visit to either Daredevil #264 or Amazing Spider-Man #16, simply out of reverence.

I thought this was a strong start to a new arc, and the addition of Noto added a new energy to the title. I gave this a four.[/i]

I'll keep this short. The art I enjoyed, McGee, Reader and Cypher pairing seems cool, but I absolutely find Mike Murdock ridiculous. I really wish he would stay in the 60's. Nods like Ed Brubaker gave him are okay but this is just silly. I wonder if Soule is running low on ideas. I'll keep an open mind but the Mike Murdock thing doesn't work for me.

Reader appeared in Soule's Inhuman run and his Uncanny Inhumans that followed that. I suspect he has a little bit of heightened senses since he seems to get by fairly well for a blind man. Certainly, closer to Stick than Matt and maybe less than that. Typically, if what he will do is read a card that says "sight," which will let him see through his dog's eyes.

#264 is a fun issue. I'll definitely think about it. I don't know if you've seen the documentary on the making of Chris Claremont's X-Men that had Claremont, Louise Simonson, and Ann Nocenti. Nocenti's recollection of the story wasn't great (she thought it was a Spider-Man story), but it was still a fun story about Steve Ditko and how he and Nocenti would talk philosophy with each other. Her retelling of the story is that Steve Ditko wanted her to write a story with babies in bags (or a baby in a bag) that was somehow a metaphor for socialism.

Will keep it short as well!

Loved the art, enjoyed Matt's speech to the citizens of NY and like that McGee was brought back into the fold.

Still on the fence around the Mike Murdock stuff, and like Mike, I will need to read the whole arc before I can properly say whether or not I like it.

However, I will give this issue 4 stars pending further review.

Four stars from me. The tribute pages to Steve Ditko were really touching, and I’m glad Marvel included them. Personally, I’m really glad we’re getting two issues this month because I can’t wait for the next one. Phil Noto is outstanding, and I’m so happy he’s on the book. Just gorgeous artwork. I especially liked the splash panel of Matt breaking the window, the sequence where he beats up the bad guy in the suit, the radar sense, the phone panels, and the page where he throws his batons to save the hostages. In addition, I’m pleasantly surprised at the darker color palette that Noto is using. I expected something bright and sunny like his Black Widow work, and instead it’s tonally a match for what I expect to see in Daredevil along with some nice halftone, scratches, and ink stipple effects. It’s really nice to have such spectacular art to look at while reading!

As for the story itself, I have no problem with Frank McGee, Cypher, and Reader in the book for the investigation. They have no home book, so if they aren’t here in Daredevil, it’s limbo or death. They fit in just fine for the current plotline; it feels organic to include them based on their skill sets, and the closed library is a good choice for a headquarters. I also liked the heroic speech by Matt because it provides a nice contrast to what Mike says later.

You are correct, and yes, he was. Obviously, he got better.

I presume Reader wanted to know some background about Daredevil before working with him and in the process read something about Mike. Not knowing Mike was just a ruse and not an actual person, he then accidentally created him. And I would think Mike is evil just because another Matt serves no narrative purpose.

Unlike the rest of you, I’ve been excited about this story since it was solicited. If I’ve learned anything from General Hospital, it’s that evil twin plots are all about the execution, not the concept itself. And speaking of General Hospital, in a hilarious bit of corporate synergy overkill by Disney, two of the characters have named dropped Daredevil and are apparently friends with the Netflix version LOL. Anyway, as long as Soule uses Mike to say something meaningful about Matt himself, then it’s worth whatever wacky shenanigans brought it about. We’re already seeing that in this issue with Mike comfortably hanging out at the supervillain bar, insulting other patrons, denouncing Matt, and proclaiming himself to not be a hero. With all the other bad guys outside, I wonder if Mike can fight too.

To me, it's critical for my overall enjoyment of the book to have great art that matches the tone of the writer. Comics are a visual medium. One of the reasons I love Bendis, Miller and Waid so much is because of what Maleev, Mazzuchelli and Samnee brought to the books. My favorite writers go hand in hand with my favorite artists.

That has been the one thing that has been hurting Soule a bit for me up until recently (though I have enjoyed his writing overall), and if this is a glimpse into what we can expect I am very excited especially given the fact that Soule really is hitting his stride on the book as for me the last arc was one of the best in recent memory.

I actually agree with this, and I should have said that I do have faith that Soule will deliver on this knowing that us as fans may be a little skeptical about it. With that said, I still want to see where it can go and am glad that we are getting another issue this month.

It does lend credence to my theory that Defenders actually takes place after where Soule's Daredevil takes place. I have no idea if that makes much sense at all, but I'm not aware of any contradiction beyond the black costume and he's switched back and forth at least once already so he could always do that again.

I'm not saying I'm not excited, just that it's hard to judge it until we see how the story is executed. This could go well or very badly.
