Hey Darediva, did you catch the shout out?

Impressed,
Tom

Yes, actually had it spoiled on Twitter! I can't believe that I got a shoutout and a letter to the editor in a #1.

That was just the epitome of cool for me.

Oh, yeah...the art, the writing, the color...all superb. I'm a very happy camper.

Just try to wipe this smile off my face. Very Happy

Darediva, that's so cool that you're letter was published in the letters page. Your letter was both inspiring and touching. Just like Daredevil himself. Great stuff.

I think it was cool that the name "Darediva" got mentioned in the comic itself.

Finally got a copy of DD#1 today, and want to know the most fun part? I got to ask 3 young men (guessing they were around 10-11) if they knew DD was relaunching. They did. I asked if they wanted to see something really cool about it, and showed them the letter in the back, and my name there, then pointed to my t-shirt with our Team Darediva Foundation Fighting Blindness logo on it.

All three: WOAH!

Me: Big grin.

I may just be showing my age and my preferences, and mean no disrespect to all those who liked this issue. As a reminder, this is feels like another version of the Karl Kesel/Cary Nord run (http://daredevil.omegacen.com/DaredevilKesel.html), another attempt to clean up the darkness, though I frankly liked Nord's art better. This bright cartoon style just isn't DD for me.. not even close. It's not just the simplicity...Mazuchelli and Romita,Jr. were both on the simple side, but always retained the pulp darkness. Similarly, Nocenti and (to my mind, unfairly maligned) Chichester had sci fi and fantasy super hero elements that I would be happy to see more of, but not like this. Bendis was brilliant, and Brubaker was a solid follow-up before the travesty of Shadowland (proof that darkness can also be marketed to younger readers). I'll keep taking a look to maybe see him win a few fights for a change, but I'm just not the market for this.

To be honest, I'm torn on this issue.

I like Waid. I thought he had some real clever moments and a couple witty lines. It was certainly a refreshing change from the dark tones of the comic for the last decade. However, THAT'S what I liked about DD! I love Maleev's art... I love the real pain, and torture that Matt was going through. That's what I like(d) about Daredevil. He was a real tragic character.

I'll admit, I really didn't like mob-wife Kiss. I thought that was the epitome of cheesy (actually no, the Spot is the epitome of cheesy). However, the issue started to get better as it went on. I wasn't sold on Paolo's art either but I'll give it more time.

At the end of the day, it wasn't a bad issue or anything, just a tone and feel that I have to get used too. A different change of pace. Hopefully Waid has can follow in the footsteps of the recent great runs on DD (minus Diggle of course).

Great review, Dave. I pretty much agree with everything you say there.

I too found this issue to be compelling. The team have managed to bring the title right out of the depths it had sunk and shown the likes of Diggle and Bru just how good this book can be.

I stopped buying the book just after Bendis left, as I thought it no longer had an originality or scope it once had. It seemed to be treading water and I for one was bored.

I loved the Bendis/Maleev take on DD, but, c'mon, THIS is a breath of fresh air and just what the character needs.

The character has been around now for 47 years, I've been pretty much there for about 38 of those, and it looks like hopefully a few more yet. I'm actually excited about picking up issue 2 and its been A LONG TIME since I felt that about a comic book, in particular this character.

I just hope this team, and Marvel, can keep the momentum going and get a good, long run of solid stories going for this title again.

comparing diggle to brubaker is ridiculous.
Brubaker had the best run on the series in series 2 for mixing super heroics and noir instead of just having crime drama like Bendis or ridiculous ninja pulp like Diggle

Wait has released one issue.

After the first issue of Brubakers run the word on the street was more positive than it is for Waid's right now.

Brubaker went with a 'big' first issue, though, didn't he? With the "death" of Foggy and the new prison setting.

Waid's first issue feels like a slower start that reintroduces a more traditional DD setting, but I think he's laying groundwork for stuff that will become more complex and interesting later.
