Hey Darediva, did you catch the shout out?
Impressed,

Yes, actually had it spoiled on Twitter! I can't believe that I got a shoutout and a letter to the editor in a #1.
That was just the epitome of cool for me.
Oh, yeah...the art, the writing, the color...all superb. I'm a very happy camper.
Just try to wipe this smile off my face. _________________ Alice

Darediva, that's so cool that you're letter was published in the letters page. Your letter was both inspiring and touching. Just like Daredevil himself. Great stuff. _________________ I am the Man Without Fear. |

I think it was cool that the name "Darediva" got mentioned in the comic itself. |

Finally got a copy of DD#1 today, and want to know the most fun part? I got to ask 3 young men (guessing they were around 10-11) if they knew DD was relaunching. They did. I asked if they wanted to see something really cool about it, and showed them the letter in the back, and my name there, then pointed to my t-shirt with our Team Darediva Foundation Fighting Blindness logo on it.
All three: WOAH!
Me: Big grin. _________________ Alice

I may just be showing my age and my preferences, and mean no disrespect to all those who liked this issue. As a reminder, this is feels like another version of the Karl Kesel/Cary Nord run (http://daredevil.omegacen.com/DaredevilKesel.html), another attempt to clean up the darkness, though I frankly liked Nord's art better. This bright cartoon style just isn't DD for me.. not even close. It's not just the simplicity...Mazuchelli and Romita,Jr. were both on the simple side, but always retained the pulp darkness. Similarly, Nocenti and (to my mind, unfairly maligned) Chichester had sci fi and fantasy super hero elements that I would be happy to see more of, but not like this. Bendis was brilliant, and Brubaker was a solid follow-up before the travesty of Shadowland (proof that darkness can also be marketed to younger readers). I'll keep taking a look to maybe see him win a few fights for a change, but I'm just not the market for this. |

To be honest, I'm torn on this issue.
I like Waid. I thought he had some real clever moments and a couple witty lines. It was certainly a refreshing change from the dark tones of the comic for the last decade. However, THAT'S what I liked about DD! I love Maleev's art... I love the real pain, and torture that Matt was going through. That's what I like(d) about Daredevil. He was a real tragic character.
I'll admit, I really didn't like mob-wife Kiss. I thought that was the epitome of cheesy (actually no, the Spot is the epitome of cheesy). However, the issue started to get better as it went on. I wasn't sold on Paolo's art either but I'll give it more time.
At the end of the day, it wasn't a bad issue or anything, just a tone and feel that I have to get used too. A different change of pace. Hopefully Waid has can follow in the footsteps of the recent great runs on DD (minus Diggle of course). _________________ **This space for rent- I accept Paypal or Money Order*** |

Great review, Dave. I pretty much agree with everything you say there.
I too found this issue to be compelling. The team have managed to bring the title right out of the depths it had sunk and shown the likes of Diggle and Bru just how good this book can be.
I stopped buying the book just after Bendis left, as I thought it no longer had an originality or scope it once had. It seemed to be treading water and I for one was bored.
I loved the Bendis/Maleev take on DD, but, c'mon, THIS is a breath of fresh air and just what the character needs.
The character has been around now for 47 years, I've been pretty much there for about 38 of those, and it looks like hopefully a few more yet. I'm actually excited about picking up issue 2 and its been A LONG TIME since I felt that about a comic book, in particular this character.
I just hope this team, and Marvel, can keep the momentum going and get a good, long run of solid stories going for this title again. |

comparing diggle to brubaker is ridiculous.
Brubaker had the best run on the series in series 2 for mixing super heroics and noir instead of just having crime drama like Bendis or ridiculous ninja pulp like Diggle
Wait has released one issue.
After the first issue of Brubakers run the word on the street was more positive than it is for Waid's right now. |

Brubaker went with a 'big' first issue, though, didn't he? With the "death" of Foggy and the new prison setting.
Waid's first issue feels like a slower start that reintroduces a more traditional DD setting, but I think he's laying groundwork for stuff that will become more complex and interesting later. |

I'm not comparing Brubaker's style with Diggle's. Brubaker is clearly the better writer, but both, in my opinion, were wrong for this book, and, one thing they had in common, both were as dull as hell.
After collecting the book for years, Bru's was the run were I finally threw in the towel and stoped buying. No originality. No vitality. Just dull, depressing storylines. Even Tree of Knowledge wasn't enough to stop me buying way back when, so Bru is certainly special in my eyes.
The 'word on the street' doesn't interest me in the slightest. Good solid storytelling with some semblance of originality and something to say does.
There was more vitality, life, energy and ideas in Waids first issue than the whole of the Bru/Diggle runs combined.
Not buying many books these days, I can honestly say its the first book of Waids I have ever read. Impressive doesn't cover it. |

It's one of the best things I've read by Waid. I've not been a huge fan of other stuff he's done, like his Fantastic Four run or Irredeemable. I quite liked some of his recent Amazing Spider-Man stories, though. |

I've enjoyed various work by Waid. I have yet to read Irredeemable but I loved his run with Mike Wieringo on FF. For my money, Waid's run on the Flash is far more impressive and illustrates a better understanding of the character than anything Geoff Johns has done on the title/character.
Cover to cover, this was a terrific first issue, full of wit and fun. Yes, it might be a striking tonal change, but one I think Waid is smart in doing. Shadowland and it's consequences are still there, it's only Matt's reaction/outlook that has changed over it. By going this different route, Waid has injected a fresh, more optimistic feel to the book (which was sorely needed) and set-up possible drama later on if Matt's 'new' outlook is his latest form of denial.
At issue's end, I felt good after reading a DD story and really, isn't that the point? |

I love the v3 #1!
To say I am so "gay" over Paolo Rivera because of his artwork is an understatement.
Love the bright colors too!!! Now I really am sure DD is wearing a red costume!
I expected very little from Mark Waid, having read nothing from him but Impulse. But damn did he deliver! If you will re-read his interviews...one thing that Matt Murdock and I guess a lot of readers does not realize is that the happy-giddy tone of the book is just an overlay. He will still have to deal with what happened during Shadowland. And a visit from Cap next issue might end with him being asked to be on New Avengers but with the shield about to hit his head. Cap's original intention is to arrest him I guess. So there, it's a good jumping point to new readers not delving too much on the past but it's enough for us oldies to sate our continuity hunger.
I can't wait for the next issue.
PS
I got all 5 covers. I almost had to sell my kidney to afford 'em though. _________________ "I'm only a DEVIL to those who are demonic." |

I finally got all 5 of the covers. My local comic shop didn't get the Neal Adams variant or the John Romita Sr. variant when issue 1 came out. After some wrangling with Diamond, they were able to get the variants.
I have to say that my favorite was the regular Paolo Rivera cover, followed closely by the Neal Adams cover.
There's also going to be a 2nd printing, I remember reading somewhere.
Did anybody get the Dynamic Forces signed #1? (Waid & Rivera) Did anybody get one of the Ken Haeser sketched covers of #1? If you did, would you like to show them off to the rest of us?
Thanks,
Tom |
