Apparently solicits for Feb indicate that issue #13 "begins the climactic final chapter of their (Waid/Samnee) beloved, Eisner Award Winning run."

I have been waiting to pick up the 7th trade of the first volume of Waid/Samnee to read past the first two books, but so far, I have really enjoyed what I've read. It's certainly quite different from what Bendis and Brubaker had done, and Shadowland with Diggle, and I've read on this board how much some people dislike what Waid has done, but over all, it seems pretty well received.

What do you think is next?

What highlights do you have from Waid's run?

One of my all-time favorite writers is Christos Gage. I'd like to see what he can do with the book.

With She-Hulk coming to a close, Charles Soule would be a very good choice, too. I've also liked his take on Matt in the last few She-Hulk issues and he's a lawyer IRL.

Those are my top two on the writing. On the art... Michael Lark. Or if Marcus To can be tempted away from DC. Or... well... anyone but whoever drew Batman:Bloodborne. Toby Cypress, I think?

Chris Samnee's artwork has been absolutely exemplary. I was (unfortunately) unaware of what he had done prior to DD, so his drawings really took me by surprise. If this run can be said to have had a real breakout figure it's him. My only regret is not seeing him do a B&W Daredevil story but then, he's not finished yet either.

I've absolutely loved Mark Waid's run, so whoever follows him has a tough act to follow. But if I were to choose any writer to pick up Daredevil next, it'd be Jason Aaron.

Jason Aaron is, in my opinion, arguably the best writer working in comics today. Not only does he have what could be Marvel's best title (outside of Daredevil of course!) in his Thor run, but he's also doing the best Image book right now with Southern Bastards. He can do both gritty crime, as seen in the likes of Scalped, and more lofty superheroics as seen in stuff like Wolverine & The X-Men.

Jason Aaron would be fantastic, but I think he may have too much on his plate right now.

I'm really enjoying Nathan Edmondson's Black Widow series, and Matt appeared in an issue. I think he would be a good fit.

Another obvious choice would be Charles Soule, given that the guy IS a lawyer. Though given that he's currently writing 317 books a month for Marvel, DC AND indie publishers he may also fall under the "too busy" category. Unless his upcoming Marvel exclusive deal and the cancellation of SHE-HULK frees him up a little.

Besides who should be the writer after Waid, another question to ask is what direction should they take this book?

Should they continue with light hearted tales or go darker? Should DD stay in San Fran or move back to NYC?

I say move him back to Hells Kitchen and darken it a bit, but don't go too far just yet. Dark moments need to stand out as something extraordinary. They lose their impact if they're the status quo.

Moving Daredevil back to Hell's Kitchen would require some retconning, since Mark Waid established in that 50th Anniversary special that Matt Murdock stays on in San Francisco through to at least the age of 50. He even laid out the building blocks for some stories that would be coming up soon, like a big confrontation with The Owl that presumably is what's coming up in this final arc of the Waid/Samnee run, and apparently Murdock becomes Mayor of San Francisco soon after that.

I hope to god that whomever takes over next ignores Waid's future presented in 1.50 and also Bendis' End of Days as they were both garbage and pathetic ends to great character.

Moving Matt Murdock back to Hell's Kitchen is easy. Just do it. I don't want Waid's run contradicted or "erased" but that doesn't mean it can't be mostly ignored. How often is the 90s "black suit" era referenced? They just moved past it, told new stories, and didn't look back. Thats all they have to do now.

Probably will never happen but it would be beyond incredible if Scott Snyder wrote DD. The stories he's turned in for Batman are just outstanding.

David Lapham would be pretty incredible actually. I love STRAY BULLETS, and his CITY OF CRIME is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated Batman stories ever. He also recently did a Daredevil story for that DARK KNIGHTS series, didn't he?

Rucka is a great choice. I'd like to see what Matt Fraction could do with DD. He seems more comfortable with the more down-to-earth heroes of the MU so he might have some interesting choices in mind.

As for direction, I think it's inevitable that Matt will return to Hell's Kitchen at some point. However, I hope such a move doesn't happen in the very first issue of the next incoming writer. In fact, I'd love to see Matt travel the world for a bit. Have some adventures abroad and I've always wanted to see more of him in Japan (or at least Asia). Plus, I'd like them to maintain a balance between light and dark elements within the stories.

The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.
