Most of my notes are incomprehensible jibberish, so I'll focus on this:

There are a couple takes on Elektra through the years. This one is very much drawn from The Man Without Fear. She's more or less a nihilist that wants to have fun while the world burns. This was my first introduction to Elektra. And there's something tantalizing about her. I have to say, though, it's not my favorite. To me, the character who is cold because her father died is far more interesting than the crazy Elektra.

On the other hand, she's still very compelling. She brings out another side of Matt. Plus, we didn't get to see his revenge on the Fixer last season. This is an interesting, different take on that. It's about Matt's moral code and whether he can cross the line for revenge. Frank Castle killed because he believed it was the right thing to do. Elektra doesn't care, she just finds it interesting. The contrast between the three makes for some compelling television.

Four and a Half Stars.

^ I actually find her more interesting as a semi sociopath rather than her actions be the result of the dead father. On one hand you have Matt, whose father died horribly but he still can't cross the line into murder. Then there's the Netflix Elektra, who will go beyond the line without any other reason other than that she's eternally unsatisfied with everything the world gives to her.

She's almost, a noir femme fatale, but even they have a reason for their behaviour. Elektra on the other hand doesn't seem to know what she wants and beneath smiles and confidence, she's deeply unhappy.

The Karen and Matt scenes have been very romantic. The chemistry between Matt and Elektra is very erotic.

I can't help, however, but think about how much less interesting this Matt/Elektra relationship is from the comic. As we all know, when Miller first created Elektra, she was someone who believed in the same things as Matt when they were together, but left him when she abandoned her beliefs after her father's murder. (In the movie she was a woman in a coffee shop who knew martial arts.) In this one, she's someone who Matt correctly identified as bored, and what they have in common is martial arts and sexual chemistry. Their connection is primal, and I find it odd that Elektra is the one trying to rekindle things.

It's different that what we know about her before, and that isn't in itself bad. But when what came before was so good, and so tragic, this just isn't as interesting.

To me, it undercuts the parallels between the two. They both have similar origins involving the death of their father to some form of organized crime. But Matt continues to keep his faith in the system while Elektra loses hers. I suppose that runs into the problem of whether Elektra is too similar to Frank Castle, but I think they're pretty different too. Castle responds with a selfless mission to rid the world of all those who do bad things while Elektra responds with ultimate selfishness. She very much does whatever is best for her regardless of the cost.

A great part of Ennis' MAX Punisher run was exploring the fact that he was never at peace except for when he was slaughtering people (most of this is in the Born mini series and his last arc Valley Forge, Valley Forge which are heavily linked). It asks the question of whether his family dying put him on the path which could be called selfless or whether his family dying gave him the excuse and the targets for what he really wanted all along. Interesting in relation to your comparison between Elektra and Frank.

It always annoys me when some people claim Ennis' run is just mindless violence because it is so much more and has depth in every arc.

We'd need to go to a later episode thread to go deeper in to whether Elektra is actually selfish or not I guess.

Yep. I think this version of Elektra is played well, it's just not my favourite take on the character.
