Daredevil Message Board The Board Without Fear!
|
The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

I can see the attraction to go back to the very beginning and re define the entire thing..
However looking at the books scheduled to be released it doesn't appear to be the case...hell I just don't know..
It's weird being a fan of these characters..of this medium in general.....I'm 50 yrs old..I've read..loved Daredevil and a few others since I was 6...I've followed nothing else like this comic book medium...musicians die...writers as well..tv shows are cancelled..their impact and legacy are very limited..while these comic characters go on...
it's really a different amazing unique hobby..passion and love...sorry for thinking out loud..but no one else will listen..lol..

I understand and, even though I am a much "younger" fan of the character, I too share the same sentiments.
What "hurts" in particular of all this reboot/death and rebirth of the universe stuff is that, if they're going for a hard reboot, all the history, recent and past, of the character will be erased, and it will have lost it's meaning.
It will mean for example that:
-Born Again will have never happened.
-That Matt will never get any revenge or come-uppance on Mr Fear for what he did to him that time.
-All the losses Matt has had, and their impact on him, will be erased.
-There will never be the chance of addressing in-universe how dumb Matt acted during Waid's run.
and the list could go on. |

It think it's all a trade off, Francesco. Sure, Born Again may not have happened under a hard reboot, but it doesn't make the story any less good. I would rather see all of the toys put back in the sandbox for new writers to play with. I'd love to see Karen Page back. Mix in a Heather Glenn and that would dial up the crazy quite a bit. I also enjoyed when Matt had to hide his secret identity from those he was closest to. I'd like to see that genie put back in the bottle. To me, the positives outweigh the negatives. |

I agree. Especially since it's not like all the events in the comics that have come before "actually happened" to Matt. How many times has his identity been exposed? Born Again, Fall From Grace, Playing to the Camera, Out and now Waid's run? And that's not counting all the times it happened in the silver age. If you really took the idea of continuity existing seriously then Matt wouldn't care less when his identity got exposed yet again. He'd be like "oh yeah, this happens quite a bit".
I think a reboot opens up other stories and leaves the other ones to be enjoyed if that's what you want to do. Win win. _________________ JC

It's funny, the more I think about a hard reboot, the more excited I get at the potential. Which, of course, means that it won't happen I fear that will be left with a middle of the road attempt to freshen up the character without the benefits of a clean slate. |

I'm still not excited about it. I find Secret Wars unreadable. And this "hard reboot" thing is something DC does, not Marvel. Marvel may open up a new universe, and in bad times they may have Mephisto make a deal or two, but they don't perpetrate a full-fledged Crisis or Flashpoint. I understand some writers find continuity a burden, but it can also be a source for new material as well. It depends on your outlook.
If, by this fall, when what I expect to be Volume 5 arrives, and Karen Page is alive, the Kingpin doesn't know who Matt is, and neither does Bullseye, Mr. Fear, Killgrave or anyone else, I'll see it as a bit of a shame. There were still places I wanted writers and artists to take Daredevil within that continuity, places where I thought he needed to go, but never did. I can't count on Waid and Samnee doing that in their final three issues.
What's also a shame is that Marvel has some pretty good series right now that are being ground to a halt because of this event. Black Widow by Nathan Edmunston and Phil Noto is the best spy book Marvel's put out in who knows how long. I've been enjoying Gerry Duggan and Marc Bagley's twisted take on the Hulk. It's a real shame that an unreadable crossover event is cancelling out highly enjoyable series. |

At this point I'm thinking a total reboot and restart for the comic is just needed whether anyone really wants it or not. You know it was one thing when after Fall From Grace and the Bendis issues that the character was able to go on almost like nothing had happened with his secret ID being exposed, at least then he kept denying it. But after how badly Waid has handled it this time, how can it go back to normal after that?
I'm still on the fence about whether I would be happy to see a reboot or not. On one hand it feels like the comic really needs it and it would be nice to have Karen Page back and to have it back where no one knows he's DD again. On the other hand it would be a shame to lose some of the big important things of his long continuity.
If they do decide to do a reboot for Daredevil (and all of Marvel in general) I want to see it done right, meaning that everything starts over fresh right at the beginning. I'm not interested in another half assed one like DC's New 52. That was nothing but a mess, with some characters starting over completely new while others had some of their history changed, some new stuff added and some old stuff still kept all at once. "This still happened, oh but this stuff never happened, and this other stuff happened that we've never shown before" ugh! I'm worried Marvel will become like this too after Secret Wars. I really hope not cause I don't think I'll be reading much of it anymore if it does. |

I'm tired of this too. The big 2 companies especially Marvel need to stop with the big event stories or at least keep them to just a once in a while thing. I'm tired of comics I enjoy suddenly getting derailed by this. I was enjoying the new Magneto series, it had it's own storyline going that was great then it totally was put on the backburner and forgotten while the AXIS crossover storyline was put into the comic all of the sudden. It totally wrecked the flow of the comic and put into it a story I really could care less about. I think as DD fans we've been lucky that they've generally kept him out of most of the big events and we could enjoy the comic on it's own, but unfortunetly most of the other Marvel titles out there don't have that |
