Taken from the most recent Lying in the Gutters column over at CBR -

Sherman Alexie, author of "Smoke Signals," "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" and "Flight," who also wrote the introduction to Jason Lutes' "Jar Of Fools," has two projects at Marvel. One is a mini-series starring the Native American mutant inventor Forge, the other is a mature readers Daredevil MAX series.

So, anyone familiar with this wrtiter? I imagine this would be for a mini-series.

I saw this too. It's a bit nuts that they don't elaberate on it at all, eh? Given how popular DD is these days you'd think a new DD MAX title would be a big story.

I'm glad it's a mini and not a second title. Will this be the era when DD becomes a more central figure in the MU? Is it too early to worry about oversaturation?

I think in 3 years, someone will take another stab at the movie.

What's a MAX title? A title where the authors throw a bunch uncensored, totally unnecessary bad words in the dialogue just for the hell of it, making the product taste like an action B-movie?

Well, I wouldn't say that about Alias. In fact, when Alias 'switched' to the Pulse, it lost too much about what made that book work.

A MAX titile was, I think, Marvel's answer to Vertigo. They consisted of more mature themes and could use "mature" language, if you consider the f-bomb mature, but they weren't necessarily creator owned work. They didn't seem to know what to do with the MAX line. They certainly didn't promote it all that heavily.

Also, Alias was superb. For my money, it's the best of Bendis.

I thought Icon was Marvel's answer to Vertigo. Even though Vertigo isn't about creator owned titles (my understanding is that DC still owns all the Vertigo material). MAX is Marvel's answer to....something or other. Maybe it was Marvel's answer to "how the blazes do we get Garth Ennis to write a Marvel book?".

I never read Alias but I take everyone's word for it when they say it benifited from the MAX "let's swear a lot" policy. I really don't see the need to put a DD mini in there though (do we know it's a mini?).

Firstly, normal imprint DD has always had it's share of mature theme. In theory both Born Again and Love and War could have been MAX titles.

Secondly, while I do see the need for swearing in certain instances (i.e. to make things more realistic. in the real world people swear....a lot) I don't really see the need for explicit swearing. At the end of the day there's no real need to write out the offending word when a "#$%&" will do just fine. In Nextwave all swears are represented by four skull and bones figures no matter how long the swear being represented actually is. To me that's just fine. I know what the swear is and my brain has no trouble filling in the blank. So nothing's lost and yet we still get to spare the hapless child who picks up the book by mistake from seeing scary, sweary words.

Lying in the Gutters is the supermarket gossip rag of the comic industry.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel did release a Max DD series but just because Rich Johnston said its on the way doesn't make it so.

It may be a supermarket gossip rag but you gotta love the Swipe File.

I didn't realize that Vertigo was all company owned work.

I'm not sure, but I believe the MAX line predated the ICON imprint.

I totally agree with you about the swearing. The #@!$ing symbols are certainly sufficient for me. The other aspect that can push a title into the MAX realm is the sex scene. You know how freaked out many in our society are about the depiction of sex. There are probably legal fears that drive the company to segregate the stories that will need the "For Mature Audiences Only" warning. If they put warnings on the regular comics, they'd open themselves up to alot of potential law suits, frivolous or not, as well as hurting the sales. I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to combine the MAX and ICON lines but I'm guessing they want one that is just creator owned. Is ICON exclusively creator owned work?

I think that Daredevil would be very well-suited to a MAX title, actually. It's already one of the most mature and 'adult' superhero books on the market - and as many have pointed out, the MAX imprint doesn't necessarily equate to gratuitous sex/language. It allows books like Alias to explore far more adult themes, and generally treat its audience more like adults.

Obviously it depends on what the writer makes of it, but it principle, I'm quite excited about the idea.
