|
|
I just posted a new 8 page interview with Dan Chichester, Scott McDaniel and Hector Collazo, where they talk about all things Daredevil: Fall From Grace. There are some cool "extras", like mp3's of ads for the arc, and also some old print ads and articles.
I hope you guys enjoy this look back at the arc. It's probably the most difficult interview I've done, but I think it turned out really well.

Wow!
FFG is a very underrated arc, with lots of flaws but also great moments.
The interview is filled with interesting comments. My only complaint is the layout that could be change to make it more readable (or maybe my eyes are just tired).
Very good job, Kuljit! _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Thank you so much for that interview, Kuljit! I can't even imagine how much work that must have been for you.
As much as I enjoyed reading the creators' take on the process of writing and drawing FFG, and all the behind the scenes revelations, it was also a great chance to get some of your own views on the story. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Wow! This was such a thorough look-back at Fall From Grace! I didn't even like Fall From Grace, but I found this really interesting.
Kuljit, do you have plans for similar retrospective interviews again? Like DeMatteis/Wagner? Kesel/Nord? Nocenti/Romita? Bendis/Maleev? Miller/Janson would be the ultimate, but Miller apparently rarely talks. |

Excellent interview, and honestly, it confirms why I was less than favorably overwhelmed by FFG.
I now wish I had the TPB of the arc, because the singles really left me in a confused state. The page layouts are probably the biggest contributor to this, and now that I know what the process from on high was, I'm a lot more forgiving about how they turned out. That had to be a hellacious way to work.
Thanks for taking time to give us the perspective. _________________ Alice

Thanks everyone, for reading and commenting... it was a lot of work to get this one done and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I do have one interview on the go right now, which covers a lot of ground, but it's not like this one. _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Yeah, great interview. I like how they both sort of cop to their mistakes and are brutally honest about their intentions with the book.
The one thing that I can say worked like crazy, at least in the case of yours truly, was the hype thing. I was hyped to high heaven when the arc came out. I think, to some extent, that hype actually blinded me to some of the stories weaknesses. At the same time there's no denying that the thing is crammed full of cool ideas. I think KM might be right by pointing out that the problem might have been too many ideas.
Also interesting are some of McDaniels comments. I remember struggling through portions of it and just thinking that some parts were just really dense. Turns out it may have just been crappy lay out.
On the other side of the coin the whole thing about how only McDaniels seemed to understand the "armour" was cool and, I think, dead on. When he drew it, it really was part of DD and clearly flexible. Everyone else drew it like football gear.
My only disappointment with the interview is KM's failure to attack Chichester over the Garrett thing. At the very least you could have said something like "JC loves your work but will never forgive your Elektra: Assassin retcon so actually hates you". _________________ JC

Really great interview/walk through memory lane.
I've made it known how I wasn't too crazy about FFG and especially the "infected" Elektra bit. And, soon after, the story telling and art just kind of got all jumbled for my taste.
Having said that, I've also made it clear how I feel about Dan Chichester. As much as I loved Ann Nocienti, Dan was a welcome chage (and the addition of Lee Weeks helped as I was getting tired of JRJR's somewhat bulky DD). I still remember that story and cover with the Punisher shooting through the roof of the bus. Tombstone and Taskmaster. Whoa! Dan and Lee came out blazing and those issues leading up to Last Rites was just about the best stuff I have ever read in DAREDEVIL. Last Rites was brilliant. And, so underated in retrospect. News flash to Kevin Smith and editor in chump Joey Q. Last Rites is the counterbalance to Born Again. Not your Guardian Crap.
Anyway, as I've said before, no one has written Daredevil in first person better than Chichester. Dan's narrative always immersed me in Matt's senses. I never forgot Matt was blind when I read Chichester. You sensed everything Matt did and realized how much better Matt was with his compensation. But, suddenly, with one slash to the skin or bad stench hanging around the corner, or sudden honk of a horn, Dan showed you just how blind Matt truly is. Issues #293-#300 rivals anything Miller did, IMO.
As for Scott McDaniel. I loved it when he came on board. I admit, the stuff kind of got chaotic from FFG and onward, but I really loved his stuff. In fact, *nerd alert*, I was so jazzed when I saw McDaniel's art that I actually wrote to DAREDEVIL. Yeah, and it got published in the letters page. I praised McD's stuff. And, what a cool guy, McDaniel actually sent me an autographed comic (issue #307 with Tombstone on the cover). And he sent a very kind note along with it. I still have both. Later Scott sent me a xerox copy of an Elektra sketch which was going to be important in an upcoming issue. Next thing you know, Elektra's back.
Anyway, Dan and Scott were a great team. And, overall, just an amazing addition to the talent that has graced the pages of DAREDEVIL.
Did I mention I loved the interview! _________________ rgj |

Yeah, good call. Last Rites was also a great ending to the saga that was unintentionally put together by Miller and Nocenti. Especially in the way it tied into the last days of Nocenti's run when DD vowed revenge on Fisk. Similarly, I really liked Chichester's treatment of Typhiod Mary. Far superior to Bendis' crazy lady in slutty clothes take on the character.
I think my favorite part of the interview is when Chichester casually and convincingly dismisses the idea of Karen dying at the hands of Bullseye as dumb. Tell me about it.
Now, who wants a Chichester Omnibus? _________________ JC

I'd buy that instead of the umpteenth reprint of DD:Yellow or Guardian Devil anyday. |

I just read the interview. And I finally realized why I never liked FFG. For me, the story had two flaws. So many things happened that, for me, it took all emotional impact. Had the story be less compact and took more time, I would have liked it. But for me, the major flaw was exactly what Kuljit wrote : I had no problem in DD changing his costume nor with the return of elektra. No, I had a major problem with Matt faking his death, and expecially after reconciling with karen. that wasn't the right thing. And cutting Matt from his legal job wasn't good either. I really want to know how he had planned the return of Matt Murdock, and what it would have caused in his relationship with foggy and karen. Does anyone know what he had in store ? |

great interview. it's been a long while since i've read FFG and i really don't have much of a desire to dig it out. as KM stated, it was just a little too ambitious...i do want to get out last rites again....but damn, it's summer again. i suppose those books will wait for a nice fall afternoon. |
