Profiles

Volume 1

Colan, Gene

Issues: -1, 020-049, 053-082, 084-098, 100, 110, 112, 116, 124, 153-154, 156-157, 363, 366-368, 370
People tend to forget that there are such things as 'Colan Daredevils' besides 'Miller Daredevils'. Classic work by a great artist.

  • Interview with Gene Colan
  • www.genecolan.com

    Everett, Bill

    Issues: 001
The creator of the Sub-Mariner co-created Daredevil with writer Stan Lee. Only penciled one issue, but did help with inks on a few more issues of DD.

    Ditko, Steve

    Issues: 001, 162, 234-235, 264
His comic with Madcap is still a favourite of mine. His greatest work was on Amazing Spider-Man.

    Orlando, Joe

    Issues: 002-004
Before his death in 1998, Joe Orlando held an editorial position at DC Comics.

    Wood, Wally

    Issues: 005-010
The artist who changed DD's costume from yellow to the now famous red. Favourite story of mine is "The Fellowship of Fear!". Also was the creator of the THUNDER Agents, and worked on many EC Comics and Mad Magazine. Tragically, Wood committed suicide in 1981.

    Powell, Bob

    Issues: 009-011

    Kirby, Jack

    Issues: 012-013
The comics legend drew two issues of DD with the help of John Romita.

    Sr., John Romita

    Issues: 012-019

    Windsor-Smith, Barry

    Issues: 050-052, 083, 236
The popular artist of Conan drew these two issues and a story with Ann Nocenti just after Miller's Born Again.

    Weiss, Alan

    Issues: 083

    Kweskin, Sam

    Issues: 099

    Buckler, Rich

    Issues: 101

    Shores, Syd

    Issues: 102

    Heck, Don

    Issues: 103-106, 118

    Starlin, Jim

    Issues: 105

    Brown, Bob

    Issues: 107-109, 111, 113-115, 117, 119-123, 125-135, 141-143
Bob Brown was a very under-rated artist. He did some work on Superboy for DC in the 70's. Died of leukemia in the mid-late-70's.

    Buscema, John

    Issues: 136-137, 219
His special issue with Miller (#219) was a classic. Not too many artists could draw a story where the lead character doesn't appear in costume once.
Known for his stints on the Avengers, Conan and Wolverine. Passed away in January 2002.

    Byrne, John

    Issues: 138
Byrne is more famous for doing X-Men, She-Hulk, Alpha Flight etc. than his Ghost Rider story for DD. He also drew some covers in the early 200's.

  • Interview with John Byrne

    Buscema, Sal

    Issues: 139-140, 218, 238, 356
Sal Buscema was a long-time penciler on Spectacular Spider-Man. He drew some DD issues and also helped Cary Nord with layouts during Nord's stint on the title.

    Kane, Gil

    Issues: 141, 146-148, 151
Many fans forget that Kane did some DD work to go along with many other great titles.

    Elias, Lee

    Issues: 144
Elias did some sci-fi work for DC and also did a syndicated strip called "Beyond Mars". In the 70's he also did the Human Fly for Marvel.

    Tuska, George

    Issues: 145
Tuska worked on the 'Buck Rogers' sci-fi newspaper strip over forty years ago, but he is probably best remembered as the artist for IRON MAN during the 70's. After Iron Man, he did the 'Superheroes' newspaper strip for DC. Like fellow artist Don Heck, Tuska was never a cult favourite, but his work had a quality and a consistency that shone through.

    Infantino, Carmine

    Issues: 149-150, 152

    Robbins, Frank

    Issues: 155
Best known work was on the classic "Scorchy Smith" newspaper strip and the post-WWII newspaper adventure strip "Johnny Hazard". His art was mainly characterized by bold masses of black. He drew Detective Comics in the 70's and also the Invaders. Frank retired to the southwest and passed away in the 90's. He remains vastly underappreciated by most fans.

    Miller, Frank

    Issues: 158-161, 163-184, 191
Towards the end of Miller's run, Klaus Janson was penciling Miller's layouts. Brought DD back from the brink of cancellation and defined a whole new era on the title.

    Janson, Klaus

    Issues: 173-190, 192-197
A comics pro who is well-versed in penciling, inking, colouring and design.

    Hama, Larry

    Issues: 196-197, 359
Larry Hama did layouts for two issues of DD and also wrote a few tales as well.

  • Interview with Larry Hama

    Johnson, William

    Issues: 197-202, 205, 207
Anyone know his present whereabouts? His work on the first few issues in the 200's was great. I especially liked his revamp of the Black Widow's costume...

    McDonnell, Luke

    Issues: 202, 204
Luke McDonnell has worked on many titles, including Iron Man and the Phantom.

  • Interview with Luke McDonnell

    Isherwood, Geof

    Issues: 203, 224

    Mazzucchelli, David

    Issues: 206, 208-217, 220-223, 225-233
It was only until he worked with Miller on Born Again that anyone noticed this great artist. After that story arc, Mazzucchelli moved to DC to do Bat-Man:Year One with Miller and now he works on independent comic series of his own.

    Jurgens, Daniel

    Issues: 224
Jurgens is known for his work on Superman, Zero Hour and Thor.

  • Interview with Dan Jurgens.

    Williams, Louis

    Issues: 237, 239-240, 243-244
After doing a New Mutants issue, Williams was poised to be the next major artist for DD. However, his work with Nocenti went unnoticed and I have no idea what he is doing now. Anyone remember Rotgut? He drew that issue.

    McFarlane, Todd

    Issues: 241
Currently at Image, overseeing 'Spawn' and his action figure empire.

    Pollard, Keith

    Issues: 242, 341-343

    Giffen, Keith

    Issues: 247

    Leonardi, Rick

    Issues: 248-249, 277, 354, 356, 375
Two of Leonardi's issues featured Wolverine. Helped Cary Nord finish some issues as well.

    Romita, Jr., John

    Issues: 250-257, 259-263, 265-276, 278-282
