The principal thread in issue 226 concerns Melvin Potter, the Gladiator. Thugs have kidnapped Betsy Beatty and are demanding a large ransom from Melvin for her safe return. "Warriors" begins with The Gladiator unsuccessfully robbing a jewelry store, attempting to raise the money. Matt Murdock is already facing bad news of his own (the closing of his law office) when he gets word that Melvin has broken his promise to behave. Daredevil tracks The Gladiator to the Dibney Museum and catches Melvin mid-burgle. Without waiting for an explanation DD begins beating the Gladiator senseless, all the while observing that his opponent hardly seems his old, brutal self. When the truth about Betsy's kidnapping and Melvin's subsequent extortion finally comes out, Matt kicks himself for treating Melvin unfairly. The Man Without Fear vows to save Betsy from her captors. Daredevil and the Gladiator surprise the bad guys but DD does all the fighting. Melvin forsakes any thought of vengeance in lieu of rescuing his lady. Melvin Potter has become a sensitive, caring man.
The deepening relationship between Foggy Nelson and Glorianna O'Breen
constitutes the secondary thread. Glori confides in Foggy that she is less
than pleased with Matt's mysterious treatment of her and is having doubts
about their relationship. Our man Nelson defends his best friend to the
last. Their conversation begins in the (ex) offices of Nelson and Murdock,
lasts through dinner and ends with a romantic, moonlit stroll through the
Columbia University campus. By evening's end it seems Glori is seeing
Foggy in a whole new light.
