I should be getting this in TPB any day now (I'm gradually playing catch up here), but I just had to ask about that much-rumored poker game. Is there any real explanation to how he does that while pretending to be sighted? Picking up on people bluffing should be a snap, but do they actually have him identifying cards on the table from a distance, or what? And, on a related note, aren't playing cards usually laminated? I'm all for imaginative use of his senses, but conveniently forgetting that he's, uhm, blind seems like an easy way out. So what's the deal here?

The explanation given was that Matt did not watch his hand, his senses could "scan" the other players and tell him their state of mind (heartbeats or sweat, that kind of stuff), so Matt can't be bluffed...

Since Blind Alley has kindly cleared the Murdock issues, I'll give you a small explanation about playing cards Wink

Where I work we print a lot of playing cards. The process used (and the most usual today) is offset printing, so if Matt can read a newspaper or a magazine (printed by offset in most cases), he should be able to read cards as well. However, as Blind Alley has explained, this is not the trick Matt uses to win his hands (ain't he a cheater? Laughing )

I am a bit of a playing card collector myself and I have not seen laminated cards. This is a type of finishing which gives a nice and glossy finish, but it is a expensive one, and it's mostly used for items where extra protection is welcome, like book covers.

Cards might occasionally have a varnish coating printed over the rest of colours, but the glossy look is due usually to the fact that it is printed on glossy paper. Another interesting thing is that many cards we print have an intermediate layer of tar between both sides of the paper: this is meant to make them more opaque and avoid the other side tof the card to be visible (it wouldn't work for Superman, tho', he would require an intermediate layer of lead Wink )

I did not know that about playing cards. Very interesting! Smile But I think it was really the glossy finish I was thinking of when I said laminated, even though I should (and do) know the difference. What I meant to say is that cards usually feel like they are coated with something really glossy where the texture is really smooth. Suddenly I feel like getting a deck of playing cards for closer inspection. I do need to get back to work though. Darn it...
