I like the Originals a lot better. I think they're better. I was about 13 when Episode 1 came out. I thought it was okay. But when it came to around Episode 3 I wasn't that amazed by it. I had actually been excited to see Anakin's turn to the dark side but I was dissappointed. It wasn't that great. I didn't think it made sense for him to just go berzerk and kill all the jedis (including a bunch of little kids). I'd give all the prequels a 5/10 and the originals a 10/10. _________________ "Helpful. Cooperative. Stupid. That's my boys." Frank Castle (a.k.a. The Punisher) Welcome Back Frank Series. |

I was born in 1977 and grew up watching the originals. Over and over. I must have seen each of the movies in the original trilogy at least fifteen times.
While the later prequels do have some merit, they don't measure up to the originals, and Jar Jar Binks makes me want to poke my eyes out. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

most people consider Empire to be the best Star Wars movie. interestingly enough, it's the one that Lucas had the least influence on. i don't think that it's a coincidence. |

It's not even close, the originals by a mile (or 1.6 kilometers for our European friends).

I thought the 1st prequel was the best of the 3 and that's the one where I found him most cringe worthy.
Am I the only one who saw the 1st original in the theater when it first came out? Should I be using the screen name of Methuselah? _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |

Am I the only one who was born the same year the first movie came out? Though seriously, I would have loved being old enough to see that. And by this, I am in no way suggesting that you're old. Did I just put my foot in my mouth?
Speaking of the first prequel, wasn't Anakin played by the worst child actor in history? _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Hey, that's okay. It is what it is or as Popeye used to say, "I yam what I yam". Of course (imagine creaky oldtimer voice), back in my day, younguns had respect for their elders!

Yeah, but that way it was a seamless transition to the grown up Anakin who I thought was just as bad. _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |

I voted for the original 3, they were the ones with all the magic, and stuff you never saw in movies before. I do like the prequel movies too. Though I didn't care for either actor that played Anakin. But Eps. 1-3 did have Natalie Portman, as Pademe.
I also think that I am the only person that likes Jar Jar Binks. lol _________________ Fear is for the enemy. |

It's okay, Doug. We can still pretend to respect you!
So which one of the original three movies do people like better? I'm a real fan of The Empire Strikes Back, myself. As a kid, I liked that whole idea of them being on that ice planet (what was the name of it?), and I also kind of like how Luke gets his hand chopped off. Yeah, I know that makes me a little twisted. There's a real dark feeling in that second movie that I really like. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

I'm old enough to remember going to see the original in 77/78. From the first shot it blew everything out of the water. Empire came along and amazingly, for a sequel, was even better!
I was never too keen on Jedi for some reason. But if it wore an overcoat and fell asleep it would still beat the dire prequels IMO. Phantom Menace was the best of the three.
I dunno. Maybe its just my age. But the first three films helped change peoples perceptions about what was possible on the big screen and the whole cinematic experience. By the time the prequels came out, the rest of the world had caught up, and they seemed desperatly trying to recapture former glories.
The Empire Strikes Back is one of the best movies made, ever, whatever the genre. |

I couldn't agree more. In terms of special effects, the first three movies still hold up. Sure, they didn't have all of the special effects that are available now, but I'm still impressed by the quality today, thirty years later. When those movies came along, they really pushed the boundaries of what was possible, as you say, and they were nothing short of groundbreaking.
And, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one to have The Empire Strikes Back as my favorite! _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Hoth was the name of the planet in Empire. I actually like the original movies the same. I'd give them all a 10/10.
I'd give all the prequels a 5/10. _________________ "Helpful. Cooperative. Stupid. That's my boys." Frank Castle (a.k.a. The Punisher) Welcome Back Frank Series. |

I find that most people like Empire best and I can certainly understand that. It's so much darker (and I love dark!) and richer with much more character development. That can be partially attributed to the first movie setting the story up so beautifully as to allow so much to develop in the 2nd. That being said, I agree that the 2nd is the better movie, but still, my favorite will always be the first. As you said, Pete, these movies changed what was possible, and so my place of honor goes to the one that started that change.
I thought Jedi was a capable wrap-up. I agree it was light years better than Phantom and the Diminishing Returns.
By the way, it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one on the board who saw it in the theater. _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |

I go back and forth between Empire and A New Hope as my favorites. It depends on the mood I'm in. Good mood = ANH, Bad = Empire. lol _________________ Fear is for the enemy. |
