I too, saw it on its original release. it struck me as lots of fun and adventure, not unlike in classic pirate movies that I love ("The Crimson Pirate", anyone?).
... And then oddly enough, didn't see the following movies until they were shown in TV. I enjoyed the "Luke, I'm your ..." thing but not the Ewoks.
Incidentally, I saw an old Kurosawa movie "The Hidden Fortress", which is said to have been the inspiration for the first SW movie: The plots do indeed have quite a number of points in common, and I recommend its viewing for it also has lots of fun and adventure, plus sword-fights, spear-fights, horse chases and Toshiro Mifune in shorts!
There are also two hapless low-rate soldiers accompanying Mifune for great comedy relief (lucas recicled these two guys into robots... ah! the death of character acting in the hands of Special effects!) _________________ Gloria

That's a great film! And there's no doubt in my mind that that's where so much of Star Wars came from. It's incredible to me how many Kurosawa movies have been remade into pretty good films in their own right, A Fistfull of Dollars, The Magnificent Seven, and to a lesser extent, The Outrage. Yet for me, with the possible exception of Star Wars, the original Kurosawa film is always far superior to the remake.

Another pretty good movie, although when it comes to the roaring adventure on the high seas, my favorites have always been the Errol Flynn classics, Captain Blood, and The Sea Hawk. _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |
