I used to read Superman and Spiderman comics as a kid, and grew up watching the original Superman movies over and over again (in fact, I partly blame the unrealistic male ideal set by Christopher Reeve for still being single). DD got me back into comics again at twenty-nine (I'm still a whopping ten days away from turning thirty, darn it!), and I like the fact that you don't have to read a dozen titles to keep up with what's going on. Still, what other Marvel titles are good reading for someone who might consider picking up something else? And I'm pretty sure I'd be happy to stay in the Marvel universe for now. It's just really confusing to me with every other character having half a dozen titles and weird continuities. So help! Anyone? Shocked

I'd suggest Ellis' current run on the Thunderbolts.

Of the current Marvel titles, I quite like Brubaker/Epting's "Captain America" and Whedon/Cassaday's "Astonishing X-Men" and Peter David's "X-Factor"... Of the last two ones, I don't know how reader-friendly might be, continuity wise, but I haven't read mutants in years and I was able to get into these without much difficulty.

... And then there are lots of nice comics outside Marvel, too... Wink

Ah... don't blame poor Christopher for that: I've been watching Charles Laughton movies for ages and I'm single, too Razz (so possibly this is unrelated to our fave actors' looks)

Incidentally, Reeves was quite good in non-Supes movies, too.

I would strongly second the Captain America recommendation. Bru's writing is every bit as sensational on that title as it is on DD and the art of Epting or sometimes Perkins, is also outstanding. Another title, not 616 universe related, but also by Bru is Criminal. I just recently read this and the first arc totally blew me away. The second arc just finished up in the last couple of weeks and it was very good too. If you like the noir elements that are in DD you'll love Criminal. It's not superhero related, but it is absolutely fantastic.

I remember him having a tough time, at first, shedding the Supe image, but he wasn't a bad actor. There's a movie he did that the critics hate, and alot of guys think of as a "chick movie", but I have to admit I have a soft spot for. It's called Somewhere in Time, with Jane Seymour, and if you can get past the 'wish' method used by Reeves' character to make his journey, it's kind of sweet and has a nice touch of irony.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

As for Reeves, I think he did well in other movies as well and I also liked Somewhere in Time even though it's been so long since I saw it, I can't quite remember what it was about exactly. I just remember liking it.

Next time I go to the States (I'm planning on getting my annual "yankee fix" in a couple of months), I think I'll just swing by a comic book store and stock up on some books. I think it's easier to get a feel for what you're buying that way compared to shopping online.

Again, thanks for the tips! Very Happy

If someone takes the time to write a word that many times (or copy-paste it...) I have to check it out. I will! Laughing

Well, it was copy and paste. But really, Fables is awesome. It really does put all other comics to shame.

Well, thank you very much! Very Happy My birthday was Wednesday and tomorrow I'm throwing a party for thirty people so if I'm gone for the message board for a couple of days it's because I'm very busy cooking. I'm curious to hear what people think of the new issue though, so I'll probably stop by from time to time over the weekend.

Two-days cooking?! sounds like a mighty Viking banquet (if yu pardon the topic) Wink

Feliç Aniversari! (and remember, from one's thirties onwards time flies!)

But of course, how are they supposed to prepare themselves for Ragnarok? Wink

Oh, didn't I tell you Thor was coming? Smile

Though, honestly, I'm just preparing as much as possible today so I can finish everything tomorrow. I'm not cooking all day, but I'm baking traditional Swedish saffron rolls (very popular in December and for Christmas) which takes a while. Then there's peeling and cooking three kilos of potatos, two kilos of pasta (for potato and pasta salads), the three kilos of roast beef, two kilos of salmon (both of which are served cold, and can be prepared ahead of time), five Quiches Lorraine, and.... Well, you get the idea. Wink
