Anyone following Spider-Man? I just read a recap of One More Day Part 3 and...well...holy crap. That, my friends, is what happens when the House of Ideas officially runs dry. I've had a lot of complaints about sub-par DD stories (mostly the death of Glori and Karen) but One More Day seems to be taking the cake in terms of ham-fisted awful.

I'm not following Spider-man, but I came across David Wallace's review of the story and it seems pretty, well, I don't know what to say. It's almost like that thing on Dallas when Bobby wasn't really dead, it was just Pamela dreaming for a year (or however long it was). Except this is much worse, of course. It seems like DD gets tampered with much less than Spidey, which is definitely a good thing. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

I think it's always a bad sign when your "story" could be used to get from any plot point you could think up to any other plot you could think up. Putting the genie back in the bottle is one thing but actually using a genie (more or less) is just nuts. _________________ JC

But what happened, in a nutshell? I heard that Mephisto agreed to help Spider-man and have May survive if Peter sacrificed his love for Mary Jane.
Yet I'm not sure it was just that, because it seems really dumb. There has to be more about it, no?
Also, why all this anxiety of "putting the genie back in the bottle"? Spidey stories were working perfectly fine with Peter and MJ married, it's not like readers were complaining about that. |

From what I heard, that was pretty much it. What this would do, in effect, is remove MJ from Peter's life entirely (make it like they never even met, or something, right?). Apparently, Joey Q doesn't like MJ, and that's that. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

That's really stupid. But I'm neither an editor nor a writer, so what do I know?
The real reason why they had to do it it's not because the marriage was who knows what incredible problem for the storytelling, but because they had thrown so much sh!t into spider-man's life without thinking to the practical consequences of it that it has soon become impossible to write stories about spider-man in a manner coherent with the fact that he still has a civilian identity and a family. |

The motivation is pretty clearly Joey Q and only Joey Q. He's literally been talking about getting rid of MJ for years. It's been this weird, vaguely one-sided debate where Joey Q says that MJ has ruined Spider-Man comics (even though they've been married for, what? two decades now).
The "how" of getting MJ out is just insane. I don't think there's much more to it than Mephesto showing up and offering the deal. Well, May got shot (and thus her life hangs in the balance for the 300th time in Spider-Man's history).
Of course, the craziest thing is that if one wants to start cramming genie's back in bottles, Peter's marriage with MJ should have been one of the last ones in. Clearly, the fact that Peter outed himself is a much heavier blow to traditional Spider-Man stories. How can they leave that horror show standing? _________________ JC

I'm guessing that in addition to hating Mary Jane, Quesada also hates secret identities. |

It's insane how much Marvel sucks now. Because of DD and X-Factor, I'm only hanging on by a thread. Luckily DC is good and Vertigo is great. I dropped all Spidey titles at the begining of Civil Crap.
This "idea" of Joey Q is ridiculous. It's halarious that Mephisto would give a crap whether or not Pete knew MJ. You would think that Mephisto would want a favor, but nah, Mephisto obviously doens't think Pete and MJ are a match. What is this? A Smallville script?? I mean if Mephisto, with all his apparent idle time, wanted to do give a hero a deal like this, you would think he would mess with DD, since he has a HISTORY with DD and not Spidey. But, whatever.
It's obvious that Joey Q is probably the worst editor in chief of all time. It's also obvious how Joey Q. comes up with his ideas. While having a big meal he contempates on a subject. In this case, "How to get rid of MJ." Later, once he has a bowel movement, Joey examines his excrement (much as we "examine" it as we read the final product) in the toilet bowl. "It's the shape of Mephisto! That's it!!"
My apologies to Ed Brubaker if Joey Q is his "long time friend." As Ed takes exceptions to personal attacks, like this one, on his friends.
Seriously, I wish Mephisto could make Joey Q "disappear."
Any wagers on when Pete and Gwen get back together?
House of Ideas? Lately its the Hovel of Crapulence.

RMLAO!
Anyway, it seems that MJ will not be totally removed from Spidey's life, but that she will become the new heroine Jackpot (who doesn't look like she has any apparent powers besides being a redehead with a perfect butt), and that she, unlike Peter, will remember their past live but won't be able to reveal that to Peter. |

Oh, yeah... You borrowed that acronym from Gloria, right?

Jackpot, eh? How about Crackpot? She also doesn't have any powers, but appears to Peter in the form of a rambling, smelly baglady. She keeps talking about their life together, but Peter thinks she's insane because she's, well, a crackpot baglady who talks to herself. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

WOW.
I was laughing at rgj's certainly accurate characterization of what Marvel idea summits must look like these days and I continued laughing at Francesco's joke about "Jackpot"....until I googled it and discovered it wasn't a joke.
That's insane. I feel like the Marvel MO these days is to come up with a fairly ridiculous idea and then add one more twist on it to make it SUPER ridiculous. Civil War was a dumb idea to begin with. Superheroes were always illegal. Hence DD's troubles before Civil War. But then they were like "screw it, let's really make this dumb" and the whole Thunderbolts thing came along.
Making MJ a "superhero" and have her remember? Well, that takes some sort of special cake. First off, I'm not a big fan of fan-boy nitpicking but a huge problem here is that to pull this off not only does Peter have to forget but everyone else does too. Like, as a result of this "deal" I assume Matt doesn't remember that Peter and MJ were together either. Well, Matt and everyone else in the Marvel U. I don't know much about Mephisto but surely this is a HUGE up in his powers. He can unilaterally change the make up of reality for everyone? That's a bit much. Secondly, everyone forgets EXCEPT MJ? What? How does that work? Why would that be the deal?
Am I the only one who is convinced that the Marvel Universe (i.e. Spider-Man and the Avengers) is now playing out exactly how the X-Men did in the 90s? Huge event after huge event in the name of sales that slowly make less and less sense. We all know how that turned out. _________________ JC

I'm not even getting into the ridiculousness of MJ being a super hero. Let's concentrate on the name.
Jackpot!
As in the famous "You just hit the jackpot, Tiger."
Wow, Joey Q, there is no "off" setting on your genius switch. And, the turd in the toilet bowl never lies! It was either Jackpot or Slots. Good call there Joey.
Seriously, what does a guy like Brubaker think about this whole Mephisto idea. You know, what does a real writer think. One of two things. He thinks the idea, natrually, sucks but would never dare say so--which is sad 'cause real writers should talk some sense to the powers that be. Or, God forbid, Bru thinks it's a "fantastic idea!" That is scary. Stop encouraging him!!!
It's amazing to compare Marvel with Vertigo. I mean, you've heard the saying "don't bringing a knife to a gunfight." For heaven's sake, Marvel isn't even bringing a knife. It's more like a tube of toothpaste.

That wasn't a joke?!! Uhm, to clear up any confusion (since everything seems possible these days), my joke was a joke. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |
