I can't believe that so far it's a triple tie !
I stated my love for #169 on earlier rounds but I don't mind doing it again : #169 is quintessential, it's pure DD-awesomeness, it should wipe out the two other contenders and deserve to lose only in the final versus Roulette...
In "Devils" you can find :
- the "TV" introduction scene with TV shaped panels that Miller would kinda re-use in Dark Knight Returns
- Some Foggy panels (that one is for Gloria )
- DD doing some detective work to track Bullseye
- Bullseye depicted at his deadliest yet, at the same time, with a scarecely seen humanity (he sees himself as the only human in a world of Devils). It's not the kind of story where you're lead to think Bullseye is just another serial killer who should be terminated. You're brought into his world and you can relate to his trouble.
- DD using his powers to detect a single cough in Manhattan in the winter
- DD deserving his "Man Without Fear" title by following Bullseye in the subway
- DD in his "Never Give Up" mode when Bullseye has the upper hand in the fight
- DD saving Bullseye from the train
- DD stating why he saved Bullseye and what he's standing for
I've also mentioned that this issue was special to me because I read it as a kid and then read it again when I came back to DD with Visionaries v2.
I remember I bought the Visionaries book in Paris because I was traveling there for the job. Before catching the train back to Lyon, I had a drink with an old friend. He asked me what I've been doing in Paris, I told him about the job and also about my latest purchase.
Well, you have to know that in France, comics are at the lowest in the scale of "respectable reading".
First are "normal" books, then you have "Bande Dessinées" (european and mainly french comics), then mangas (who got "respectable" since they sell very well) and at the bottom : comics (who've been for long printed in press magazines on toilet papers).
So, I told my friend I had bought this DD comic-book and he was a bit like "Huh !? What's to read in there for a supposedly grown up guy ?"
I knew it would be hopeless to try to convince him comic-books could be worth reading but I simply wanted to explain what I like in these books and I took "Devils" as the example of good comics stuff.
Because that's not only a quintessential DD story, but also a quintessential "superhero" story.
Guys in tights fighting each other. Incredible and unrealistic powers. Kids stuff. That's what a superficial read will let you think.
But there's more to it. Or at least, you can find more if you actually READ.
That's what I like in #169. It has everything a kid could ask for a superhero story and at the same time it also provides a good reading for grown-up fanboys.
Sorry for the "Christine-like" post , showdowns have been short on comments lately and I had to "share" my "Devils" experience with you before it bites the dust! _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Thanks Alley . I was undecided between 34 hours and Devils, but your comment made me decide in favor of the latter beyond any reasonable doubt. |

I confess I am surprised at reading this!
I knew that in France, the Bande Dessinée was regarded with respect, and also the manga, as you have said... Therefore I am shocked to read that comics are so ill-considered. While I won'r say that everything coming from the USA mainstream is high-Quality material, certainly some authors working for USA comics (wether they are American... or British! LOL) are comparable with the best of European authors.
I mean, I like Patrick Cothias as much as I like Brubaker, or Rumiko Takahashi, for instance. So the fact that some people regard comics for its geographical origin or the material in which they are printed is a bit puzzling to me.

OoOooOOH! Thanks!
Now seriously, Heather's remark about Matt secretly working at Barnum's is riotous. Yet it is instrumental in making us understand how Foggy could be ignorant about his partner's double life..."For God's sake, he's a blind man" you know, the "hiding in plain sight" thing, for Foggy, strange as Matt might act often, the idea of him being a superhero (or lion tamer at the circus) is just inconceivable.

Mmmh... I miss that. With his enhanced senses, Matt could be one of the world's greatest detectives. But more and more we see him getting information out of, say, just beating the crap out of the patrons at Josie's.
While I can see the use of intimidating the Turks, Mervs and Chicos who can give you relevant information, I still think that Matt is has been underusing his gifts for a long time.

Yes, it is great to have a window to his thoughts (as when he tracks Elektra to kill her, in a later episode). It doesn't make us sympathyse with him, but we get a smattering about what's going on within his head.
Other pluses of the story: Matt's moral stance... We see what he fights for, but he doesn't fight for right or Justice at any price. He even wants Bullseye rights to be respected
I also loved the film geeks in the story: One curious thing: one of them attempts to kill Bullseye when he's having an attack, but then isn't able to kill in cold blood... (I'm afraid that Miller wouldn't currently write the scene like that)

Some people disregard superhero comics on such prejudices... But, to me, it is like the ones who says that dislikes opera because "it's just about fat ladies singing"... As we say in my country, some despise what they ignore, which is sad. _________________ Gloria
