Besides being a DD-addict, I do have other hobbies, and one of them is "mixology" : I like to make cocktails.
So, lately, I've been thinking about making a cocktail that would refer to my favorite comic-book hero.
For me, the "obvious" thing to do was to create a variation of the famous Manhattan cocktail. After all, DD is a New-Yorker.
The "normal" recipe of the Manhattan is : two parts Rye whiskey, 1 part red sweet vermouth and a dash of angostura.
Well, as rye whiskey isn't easy to find, a lot of bartenders will replace Rye with Bourbon.
My idea for a variation was to make an "Hell's Kitchen" cocktail.
Well, I did some research and there's already at least one cocktail recipe named Hell's Kitchen but it's using Irish Whiskey and Bailey's cream, so it's not a Manhattan variation at all.
I've tried several changes and I came up with a not so bad recipe :
- 2 cl of Rye Whiskey
- 2 cl of Irish Whiskey
- 2 cl of sweet vermouth
- a dash of angostura
- two dashes of Peychaud's bitter
First, I thought to replace all the rye with Irish whiskey but it didn't work very well because rye has a specific flavour (kinda sweet and strong) too different from Irish whiskeys (oily with floral notes).
My choice for Rye was Rip Van Winkle because it's the stronger Rye I have, at 95,6 proof (the other one I have is Rittenhouse 80 proof).
My choice for Irish whiskey was even more limited : the only one I've got is Redbreast 12.
The other change to the classic recipe is adding Peychaud's bitter to angostura. Peychaud is sweeter than angostura and has nice red color.
So, I put some ice cubes in a cocktail glass (to pre-chill the glass) and other ice cubes in the tin of my cobbler shaker (I don't have a mixing glass).
It's a STIRRED cocktail, not a shaken one !
Stir for about a minute, then empty your chilled cocktail-glass and pour the cocktail through a Hawthorn strainer.
Here comes... the Hell's Kitchen !
So far, it's my best attempt, it's a rather strong drink but subtle enough. Next time, I might use orange bitter instead of angostura...
If you come up with any other Daredevil-related cocktails idea, let me know ! _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Nice work, Alley! Thumbs up.
I'll write down the recipe and try it tonight. |

Oh... what a grand idea!
BTW, I'm not -by far- a cocktail expert, but I dig the Whisky Sour... What about adding a bit of lemon juice to the mix? _________________ Gloria

Looks fabulous! The glass you used is great, too. I am not much of a drinker, so I have no idea how that might taste.
To the new Hell's Kitchen: here's looking at you! _________________ Alice
