Holy crap, the House of Ideas!

Granted, we haven't read the story, and we should give Bru the benefit of the doubt, but holy crap, on the surface this sounds like such a crap, generic and amazingly silly idea/character.

Oh, man, Lady Bullseye. With a bullseye on her forehead, no less. Well, at least she's a "lady." *Cue Tom Jones*

Oh, well.

I'm inclined to agree. It does sound rather silly. On the other hand, I think Bru can work it. What does, sort of, save this premise at a first glance is that there appears to be a very deliberate copycat element to this character who, underneath all that, might turn out to be very different psychologically. She also doesn't appear to hold the same personal grudge (although, why would she?). We'll just have to wait and see! Brubaker hasn't written anything that fits in the silly category yet so I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

better to provide the link:

I don't think I've much to add to what you already expressed, besides the fact that I hope they adopt Djurdjevic's dark red and white theme instead of the flat black and white one.

I also have some doubts about the name. Bru seems decided to use Lady Bullseye, but in the case of the original Bullseye, the name also conveyed a particular emotion, the almost playful way he killed his victims.
This, in my opinion, doesn't fit well with an oriental themed character. I think they should search the japanese translation of the title "Lady Bullseye" and see if it works better as a name.

I agree with you about the name, Francesco. Another thing I thought about is this.

Is Brubaker the kind of guy who regularly comes up with gimmicky characters that lack depth or originality? No

Is he most likely aware that many fans' first instinct will be to dismiss this character as an uncreative rip-off? Yes

Does this mean that he must have had a very good reason for coming up with this character and a good story to tell where this particular character is a necessary ingredient? Well, that's my theory anyway.

It's no secret that I'm completely sold on Brubaker's work, but that doesn't mean I will automatically swallow anything he feeds us. However, he's a good enough writer that I'm confident that he knows what he's doing here. There's no guarantee that this will be a hit or even a great idea, but the odds are definitely in Bru's favor.

I managed to speak to Warren Simons about Lady Bullseye briefly, here: http://www.comicsbulletin.com/news/121232822560529.htm

at first glance, i got the same instant karma that rgj expressed. but i do agree with jumonji. bru has a wonderful track record. so i'm going to give him the benfit of the doubt.

IMO,what gives it some promise is the fact that this doesn't appear to be a impluse idea. there's something to be said about an idea that won't work itself out of your mind.

I can't wait for the issue where Lady Bullseye and Echo team up to stop Bullseye and the Taskmaster!

Also: is it just me or does the costume work better as an idea than in execution?

Female versions of already established male villains are kinda lame. Remember Lady Octopus? Its just sad when a new female villain is just a clone of a popular male villain. Wow, the same old Bullseye stories, only with a girl.

I think it would be better if they just gave Typhoid Mary an arc to herself, there is a female villain who isn't a clone and she could use some more panel time.

I agree that it's unfortunate when new characters are heavily influenced by existing ones, but we have no indication so far that this character will be a "clone" in every aspect, nor that this story will necessarily rehash old themes. I still say that we should reserve judgement on this particular character until we see the end result. Who knows? This could be that one exception that actually turns out to be a good idea.

Another sad truth is that copied characters are probably easier to sell. People claim to want originality and they claim to want new characters, but my guess is that it's probably harder for the publishers to get people to notice new characters without a recognizable gimmick.

You could argue that Lady Octopus was somewhat different in Dr. Octopus, but in the end they were pretty similar, she wasn't different enough to justify the character. I mean really how often in the past has this concept worked. Plus another ninja girl?! Come on. I mean by her nature she will never outshine the first Bullseye and will always be in his shadow, not much of a future for this character, besides ending up as target practice when the first Bullseye comes back. This character would need a real good hook, because at this point she seems lack any original ideas.

You know maybe Bru could come up with a good twist for this concept, but that doesn't change the fact I don't like the concept itself and I think it takes panel time away from more interesting concepts.

Again, I agree introducing new villains is tough nowadays. But there are tons of existing villains who don't get enough panel time. Typhoid Mary could really use an arc by herself.

You make some very good points, and I agree about using and revamping existing villains (when are we going to see the triumphant return of Stilt-man? Wink). I'm not a big fan of Typhoid, however. Just out of curiosity, I'd be interested to hear what kind of story you think she would be good in, and do you think she could be used in a way that is not just another personal attack on Matt? She of all people would have a good reason to hold a grudge, considering he had her committed and everything...

Personally, I can't wait to see Stilt-Woman and Typhoid Mikey introduced to the book. Smile
