I checked this new movie written and directed by Frank Miller yesterday, and was stunned by the Daredevil references. And it's the Spirit. It has nothing to do with Daredevil. Two examples, just off the top of my head.
1. The femme fatale, named Sans Serif, is said to have "an Elektra complex." She was the Spirit's girlfriend when they were both younger, but her father was killed and she went away. Now she's back, and is on the other side of the law.
2. Sans Serif leaves behind a clue at the scene of the crime. The spirit picks it up and, in an internal monologue, says, "Nice piece of work Sans. You shouldn't have signed it." |

I haven't seen the movie, but you did a good job picking up on those DD references!
Unfortunately, from what I read, the movie's getting almost universally panned.
I'm curious to know what was your take on the movie? Is it better than the reviews indicate? |

I never read The Spirit, or seen the film, but from the previews I see lots of DD in it (like the Spirit running, very DDish, between rooftops on a guywire). I concluded that Miller no doubt used alot of his stuff to make this film. The "you shouldn't have signed it is another example."
By the way was the Spirit comic really like the film? Did FM stay "true" to the comic? The reason I ask is because Miller was so adament about not having his stuff done on film, becasue "Hollywood" would crap all over his creations. So, did Frank stay true to Will Eisner? Or is Will spinning in his grave becasue "Hollywood" crapped all over his creation?? _________________ rgj |

I enjoyed it. It's not as gory as Sin City, and I'm okay with that. It's over-the-top film noir, and I had a lot of fun with that. It's not a movie to be taken seriously, but if you enjoyed the style of Sin City, it's back in The Spirit. It's a fun noir movie.
Having said that, I have never read a Spirit comic, but I'm now curious about them. I don't expect them to be exactly like Miller's movie though. |

I'm pretty sure that Miller has admitted to basically "ripping off" Will Eisner's Sand Serif character when he created Elektra. If I remember where I read or saw that, I'll post it. _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Kuljit, it was The Comics Journal #70 (Winter 1982)
Interviewer: " What was your reasoning in creating Elektra?"
Miller: " I wanted Daredevil to have a female antagonist, like Sand Saref in The Spirit. In fact, I ripped off the first Sand Saref story to do the first Elektra story. Rather than just regurgitating it though, I put a harsher edge on the conflict...Elektra is definitely one of the bad guys in the strip" |

My mini review I posted in another forum...
Quote: | The Spirit
At times it was awesome, at times it was retarded, overall it was a mixture of love, hate, what the heck, and they could have executed that better...
6/10
It's worth a look. I know others liked it much more then I did...
I was unsure as to what to think of this movie. It started out great, went to awful, up and down, all around, back to crap, hit average, and ended with a meh.
Overall this movie is a total disappointment. I guess Miller felt like he could do whatever he wanted with The Spirit mytho's/characters and no one was really going to care because not many people outside of hardcore comic book fans really know who The Spirit is.
Watch this movie without any expectations and you just might like it. |
