Well, that's not really a fair quote. Morrisson says that while talking about the...um...."super" part of superheroes. He's talking about superheroes as ideals, and yeah, in that context, I can see why Rorschach is appealing to some. The idea is that people want to believe that heroes have a kind of perfect determination. Which Rorschach does in spades. He never gives up. Hurrah!
The problem, however, is what he's not giving up on. I just flipped through the first issue and, yeah, Rorschach is an evil facist. He's not just out to prevent crime. He was a massive problem with sex. He doesn't seem to like people having sex. He's obviously anti-women (he calls the first silk specter a whore for no apparent reason and calls the comedian's attempted rape of her a "moral lapse"). Just to make him more fun he's also homophobic. His pro-capitalism/anti-communism stance clearly puts him in the neo-con camp. Oh and as for the "facist" thing. That's not me, that's Moore. Oz points out that the comedian is practically a nazi and Rorschach says "well, then you might as well call me a nazi too". The thought is left out in the open when Oz simply replies "hmm".
But that's the point of Rorschach and Watchmen in a way. Part of it is the idea that fighting crime is kinda dumb. If you really felt like fighting crime you'd basically just be beating up junkies and the poor. That's the path Oz specifically chooses not to go down and one that Rorschach is more that willing to walk down until the ends of the earth.

| People love Rorshach for basically one reason, and it's not the reason cited by Morrison. Rorshach is a badass. That's it--period. He's certainly a neocon, but I think many readers don't really care about some of the politics in Watchmen. Rorshach is a really extreme version of Archie Bunker. Despite a lot of his beliefs, people dig Rorshach because he's a quirky badass with a cool pattern-shifting mask, keen detective skills, and pithy remarks, and he's prone to ultraviolent behavior. |
