I'll be posting my review on Tuesday, but in short: this is one of the best (if not the best) issue of Brubaker's run so far.
Having read it a few times, I already think it's one of my favourite singles issues of any comic.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.  |

| I am cautiously optimistic. I do have to say that it's a strong opening. In a way it kind of gives me flashbacks to the first issue of Incognito. |

As Isaac, I got a kick of seeing Fisk in the Costa Da Morte.
incidentally, I wonder why Kingpin should choose to retire to Galicia, an Atlantic region of Spain known for the Jacobean pilgrimages, excellent fish (and shellfish), and in the last decades has achieved a notorious reputation because of... the drug trade! Hum, Mr. Fisk, are you visiting us for holidays or for work?
Anyway, the preview looks pretty good! Good "conceto"

Wow. Really? I can hardly wait. Certainly, it seems so from this preview. I wonder if DD will appear, or be mentioned by Fisk in his inner monologues and how. |

Those first few pages looked really good, so I'm not surprised to hear that you liked it. One of the best ever? That's certainly exciting. Does DD/Matt appear "on panel" at all or is he referred to in writing only?

Personally, i think that an all-Kingpin issue (no Matt, costumed or not ;D) as this one seems to be, can be terrific. Fisk is a character so rich he could have his own series.

Yeah, I pretty much expected this to be all about the Kingpin, and I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. I just figured that Matt might appear in one shape or another, kind of like he did in the Foggy issue a couple of years ago. I'm so looking forward to this!

There have been quite a few of these character-focused one-shots since Brubaker started his run, so I think you probably all know what kind of thing to expect. |

Years ago Kingpin did have his own series several years ago. I picked up the first issue. It was written by Bruce Jones, who was doing an awesome job on the Hulk book at the time, and Klaus Janson was the artist.
I didn't pick up the second issue. It was basically Fisk walking around with some young protege. Fisk hadn't risen up to Kingpin. Spider-Man made an appearance stopping a mugger or something, and that was supposedly the first time Fisk saw Spider-Man. Didn't do much for me.
I've never heard of a long-running comic book series centred around a villain though, without turning that villain into some sort of hero.
I agree that the issue looks great. The preview reminded of the classic Kingpin feel from Miller's old days. That's a compliment to Brubaker. I think he nailed it. |

In any case, you have me excited. I don't think the Kingpin has been given his due since Last Rites. For the most part it's been Kingpin "returning" just to get slapped down again. I'd be happy to see a true return to form. My favorite Kingpin moment in recent history was probably Kingpin with Bullseye and Matt back to back fighting in prison so maybe Bru is the man to finally bring him back.

I see what you mean.
But it's very much a question of personal taste. It's quite possible that many DD fans will read this and not be as impressed as I was.
I just found it to be a very well-told story (in terms of both writing and art) and one that has me very keen to see what happens next. |
