Hey Marvel, what a great way to celebrate DD#500 by ripping off the loyal fans! Making alternative covers is all fine and dandy if thats what collectors and fans want, but alternative covers that are gonna bleed us dry is another matter indeed. Is that how you reward the loyalty of the Daredevil fan base for sticking with you through thick and thin.
I know some fans out there will say, "well don't buy 'em then", and I do know I have a choice, but come on, surely people can see where I'm coming from here? |

If you don't want 'em, don't buy 'em.
Or wait for the trade which will almost certainly contain all the covers.
Anyway, who are you to decide for people who DO want to buy all the different covers? Those people shouldn't be even given that choice because you don't want them?
Anyway, welcome back to the land of the living. _________________ JC

While I can see both sides of this particular argument, I don't think we DD fans should hold too much of a grudge. Marvel has done this with ALL of their monster anniversary issues this summer (Thor, Hulk, Cap, Spidey) so they're puttin' it to everyone, not just us.
I myself will definitely be picking up the two 50/50 covers and trying to pick up the other two variants depending on how pricey they get at my local shop's silent auction (that's how they distribute all of the ratio'd variants with proceeds going to a local charity). _________________ https://twitter.com/tburnham7

Woah James, all this negativity, has somebody had a bad day?
You don't work for marvel do ya?
It's a rip off and you know it and they know it too. A celebration of DD #500, YEAH RIGHT!!! If they weren't gonna make money out of it, they wouldn't do it.
Who am I to decide for people who do want them? Well I don't know where that come from? I'm not deciding anything James, I'm just expressing my opinion, after all, it is my right you know.
It's also my opinion that your reply to my post, is full of anger, chill out pal, it's an opinion that's all....and I stick to it.

They make extra covers for everyone's taste and to make cash, but Marvel Publishing is a buisness first, so they will explore all the option to make more profit but keeping the same client. |

Oh. I misread your name as "Steve Rogers". Hence the "land of the living" remark. Given your actual name my comment makes no sense. Sigh.
Also, I don't think my post was either negative or "full of anger". I would bet an incredible amount of money that you are a teen.
As for the covers and you deciding for others it's like this: assume there are two types of people. Group A wants to buy lots of different covers and Group B doesn't. Your opinion (why do trolls think that using the word "opinion" instantly ends every argument?) is that Marvel shouldn't produce all these different covers for issue #500. If Marvel listened to your opinion then the people in Group A would be sad because they could only buy one kind of cover and the people in Group B would be happy because they only want one cover anyway. BUT, if Marvel didn't listen to your opinion and made lots of covers then the people in Group A would be happy because they could buy all the covers they want and the people in Group B would be happy because they could just buy one.
I guess there are people in Group C. People who feel "compelled" to collect everything and buy everything with the word "Daredevil" on it. But that's not Marvel's fault. That's your deal. It's like the various collections that come out these days. DD comics are now coming out in floppies, TPBs, hardcovers and omnibuses. There are some people who buy all of these. Those people are a bit crazy (well, they are) but they only buy all of those things because they want to. You can't blame Marvel for giving the consumer choice. _________________ JC

Hi James, well I'm so pleased that you didn't bet an incredible amount of money that I'm a teen and you will be too. I'm actually a 45 year old (troll, an insult whenever i've seen one, and you say that your not angry......did I insult you when you expressed your OPINION?) and I do feel I have a right to express whatever opinion I feel like on this website, where I (did) feel free to interact with other fans of Daredevil, without too much fuss, but obviously that isn't the case.
I'd like to know how on earth you come up with the conclusion that I was a teen? Please tell me, I'd love to know, or will that lead to yet another insult. |

What's exactly your opinion? I'm not sure I got it.
Marvel is ripping off readers with #500 because they're making variant covers? How?
James' opinion is quite clear, basically he's saying that by making alternative covers Marvel will please both the collectors who like to buy them, and the rest of the readers, who are free to buy only one copy. Seems logical enough to me. |

Variant covers inherently cost more if they are of value. This isn't anything new. So it'd be one thing if they were just making a certain cover or two and charging double or whatever, so you were forced to buy it. This I'm guessing is not the case. So really it just comes down to choice.
Using the logic expressed by some, one could go into a comic shop and express their love and devotion of a title and expect to get it for free. |

I think you answered your own question.
As James said earlier, if you just want a copy of the artwork and don't want to pay more than cover price for it, then the covers will almost certainly get reprinted in the TPBs.
If, on the other hand, you want to get hold of the variant cover copies because they're rare and collectible, then you can't complain about having to pay the higher price that the market dictates. |

Hi Dave, If there's a variant cover from time to time, thats fine, but recently there's been quite a few in good ol' DD land, with the Lady Bullseye chapters and the ape cover and the alternative villain cover and I just think that lately marvel has been milking the alternative cover thing on this title too much. My beef isn't totally with Marvel,(altough they don't help!) it's also with the people who exploit us fans, by over pricing these variants too.
I am going to buy these different covers cause I'm an avid collector and fan (boy/man? whatever...haha) of DAREDEVIL as I have every DD issue (vol 1 and 2) ever printed and I'm a Marvel fan too believe it or not, and Iv'e been reading and collecting their titles for over 30 years now, so I'm not totally against Marvel, It's just that I'd wished they'd leave off with the variants with DD for a while.
As I can see by all your posts Dave, your a massive fan of DD yourself and must understand to a degree, the point I'm trying to put across here? |

As a fan of DD, I can understand where you're coming from - but the collector mentality is one that I don't share. I've always been more interested in the stories than the collectible element.
I can see why it would be frustrating to feel as though Marvel is gouging fans for the variants, but I think that the only way to stop them from producing more of them is to vote with your wallet, and not pay over-the-odds for them. |
