Picked up the Return of the King trade today. Unsurprisingly it has all the alternate covers for 500. Guess what it doesn't have? The back-up stories from 500. What the huh? This is garbage. Why on earth would they leave them out? I'm not the biggest fan of Bru's work and I was actually really looking forward to the Nocenti story. Ridiculous. _________________ JC

If I remember correctly, Brubaker said in a recent Word Balloon interview that one of the reasons that he hasn't collected the back stories from Criminal in the trades is that he hasn't figured out a way to get proper compensation to those authors that contributed to those pieces and he didn't want to 'rip off friends' by not making sure they got their cut.
Now I realize that's from a creator owned book from Marvel's Icon imprint, not a 500 issue running iconic character so it may be comparing apples to oranges, but I wonder if something similar had to do with Nocenti's story not being included.
I passed on the tpb in hopes that the second half of the Brubaker/Lark run in collected in another Omnibus.
I would have been disappointed as well though - if a tpb states it includes an issue and only reprints part - then it should be stated. _________________ https://twitter.com/tburnham7

That's surprising. I expected all of the extras from #500 to make it into the TPBs.
Hopefully the second Brubaker Omnibus (if there is one!) will collect it. It's worth a read if only for David Aja's fantastic art. |

I'm tempted to pick up a floppy out of respect for Nocenti. At the same time I'd rather not play into Marvel's sad money grab. Buying Bru's second omnibus is similarly out of the question (let me get this straight, Lady Bullseye's plan to draw the Kingpin into a fight with DD was to murder his new magical (and insanely cheesy) family? how was that supposed to even kind of work?).
To add insult to injury the paper quality in the newest trade is noticeably worse than previous ones. Same price though. Go Marvel go. _________________ JC
