All right. That was fairly asinine, was it not? Is that really what's supposed to put such a huge stain on their relationship that it'll infulence their interaction during Shadowland - stupid bet between who'll win in a straight up fight? Surely this preview is a jest. Surely such cheesy dialgue, half decent art, and a maddeningly ridiculous proposition from DD, a man normally far more circumspect than he's shown here, isn't the true cause for the rift they've have between them during Shadowland? Nahh. Something else much more serious and important is bound to happen later on in the issue. It has to!
In addition, Foggy there almost seems like a caricature of himself as harshly as he's adminishing Matt. I really wish this isn't how the monthly will be be when it returns in true from come July (yea, depsite the reveal of issue 507, I still consider the present arc filler. I am grealty thankful, though, that it's removed Matt from the Siege nonsensense so for that alone I will get issue 507 as a gesture of that thankfulness. And because the preview art was very nice!). |

The one-shot takes place in the past, not the present timeline (Cage is still wearing his old costume with tiara). From the solicit, it says this story shows "mutual respect" between the heroes that will soon be torn asunder in Shadowland... so this story doesn't necessarily show the reason they will be in conflict later.
As Antony Johnston has said himself... "it's just a bit of fun". I'm taking it as an homage to past comics where the stories were like this... just pure superhero interaction without all the seriousness.
Ah well, we'll have to wait and see next week where the rest of the story goes... _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Cage Match seems to have the old school look and feel to it. I'd be okay with this being a break "just for fun" before all the seriousness of the premise of Shadowland. _________________ Alice

Ah well, we'll have to wait and see next week where the rest of the story goes... | If that the case you can cannot fathom my thankfulness for not having grown up in the era. I found that preview, in comparison to what I've come to expect from DD, to be quite awful. Everything about was just repulsive. The adult oriented, hieghtened realism of DD with that tinge of superheroics is why I love the character and his world as much as I do. This preview, as can clearly be seen, is much too peurile and lighthearted for my tastes. Needless to say, there's very little question I'll be skipping this one. This isn't to say it will be awful. I do hope those who buy it enjoy it. This simply isn't the DD I've become such an ardent fan of. |

So I actually enjoyed this one shot even though it wasn't what most people would have expected given the way the solicitation was written - which made it sound as though this was the seed of a rift between the two characters as opposed to friends brawling due to mutual respect.
However, I do have one problem with 'Cage Match'. Turk is rolling with a digital camera. That's right, a digital camera. Last I checked, Luke wasn't rockin' the silver tiara even remotely close to the era that digital photography popped up.
Other than that it was an entertaining read. I'm not sure that it really revealed anything that we didn't already know about Matt and Luke's friendship but I guess it does bring the topic to the forefront heading into Shadowland. _________________ https://twitter.com/tburnham7

I must admit, I laughed at Turk's appearance. That was a very interesting take on him (and a different look). I was also happy the issue wasn't $3.99 like Marvel usually does on these types of one-shots/mini-series. As Antony Johnston said in an interview, it was supposed to be a fun story, and it was. I think the original solicit made it seem like it would be super serious. _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Ah, the perils of working a sliding timeline with a character that has decades of real-time on the shelves.
Even though the digital camera is certainly an anachronism, it didn't bother me a lot. You'd have to ditch the cellphones, too, if you match the technology with the costumes.
Honestly? I was happy to find some humor in this one-shot. We are entering the most doom-and-gloom era in DD history with the Shadowland thing, and it's good to see something akin to one of the stories told back in the Kesel era. It didn't harken all the way back to the silliness of some of the 60's, though, and I was glad for that.
I always find it interesting on some forums to see some dropping the title because it's too dark for their tastes, and on others, find those who hate anything that isn't deadly serious. I'm sure a lot has to do with where one entered the DD timeline, but after reading the whole series, it's easy to see how the pendulum has to swing at some point. It's rather difficult to outdarken total blackness.
Turk has always been the go-to guy to breathe a little levity into the title. Dude always has an angle to try to make a little fast cash!
Thanks for a much-needed Daredevil Lite story, Mr. Johnston! _________________ Alice

You have to love that they put out a Daredevil comic suitable for kids right before the huge street level murderfest with the Hand and the Punisher. Some parents may be in for a bit of a surprise if their kids get into it.
Thought it was great. Much more lighthearted than I thought it would be. _________________ Random Insanity since.... Ummmmm... Tuesday? |
