Was it actually pretty good or am I going mental? Enjoyed the art (the gritty art is cool but its nice to get a break and this was more appropriate for the setting), loved that they showed his superpowers working (but not over the top), and thought the inner monalogue was good.
Marvel will have to be careful, this might actually make Matt cool again. _________________ when walking just walk, when sitting just sit, above all don't wobble. |

Haven't said much in a while, but I really liked DD:Reborn #1.
Matt's got a bit of a wild/homeless look to him with the ragged hair and beard, but hey, he's let himself go on purpose.
Guess he traded in those running shoes for some hiking boots out there in the countryside somewhere.
Fun to see how Diggle scripted this story (I LOVE reading scripts) and how it was interpreted by the artist and colorist. I lived out in that part of the country for a couple of years, and it's got the right tone and look to it. I'm not sure I ever had any grits while I lived in New Mexico; a breakfast burrito or huevos rancheros are more the common fare, but no matter.
Loved the part about the laminated menu. No damn superpower against that, or the chalkboard menu. Works for me.
Imagine that: even these redneck deputies know how to use the internet! Hooboy! They're uptown!
Great last page, too. Booya, Sheriff! _________________ Alice

Just read them both. First issue was good. Second issue was terrible. Its like Diggle thought "What would Frank Miller do? Add a whore!" I had many more problems with it but its very late and I need sleep. _________________ Random Insanity since.... Ummmmm... Tuesday? |

Hey, don't sell the idea short. I bet Nocenti would have added a whore as well. _________________ JC

I think think the whole idea of "Reborn" is based on "What would Frank Miller do?" BUT that doesn'tmean it can't be good!! I think it's good, not excellent but decent!! _________________

Whew. DD Reborn is over.
Like I have said since issue #1 of this mini, it feels like a mediocre made-for-tv movie.
As one of the comic book sites pointed out, there's $16 that I am probably never getting back.

I for one think it's $16 or 800 Philippine peso well spent. If for nothing else. The art alone on DD: Reborn is something we have not seen in a long time. Gianfelice's work leaps out of the pages. And who knew DD books can be shaded with bright colors?
The story for me is also quite great, script and all. Too bad a lot of people read it with not much love for Diggle anymore. If they had otherwise, they would enjoy this mini for sure. _________________ "I'm only a DEVIL to those who are demonic." |

Reborn was the crappiest part of Diggle's run. As bad as the Shadowland books. Like the Shadowland comics, the art was the worst part about it. I dunno how good the story would've had to have been to have me enjoy that art style. I liked a couple pages here and there but. . . the story was a little bit lame too.
I agree -- if it was a movie it'd have been made-for-tv budget. |

In the final analysis is it at all "required reading"? Do you think it will have any effect at all going forward? I haven't skipped an issue of Daredevil in decades (except for Vision Quest which wasn't really DD anyway) so normally I would just pick it up. On the other hand Shadowland was the worst thing I've read in decades and, in theory, Reborn is just a mini. So, skip to not skip? _________________ JC

You don't have to read it. If you don't want to read it I'll spoil it in two lines below and not really miss a beat...
spoiler
Matt gives up on heroism goes to a hick town meets a blind kid and tries to destroy some guns. After he realizes he has to be a hero some guy who can make him realize his fears freaks him out and shoots him in the head, next issue it is shown matt actually dodged the bullet, sees the blind kid again, is convinced to be a hero again, beats up all the redneck cops running guns out of the town, beats up the mind reading guy and then shows up at foggys house uninvited ready to be daredevil again.
everything happened way too fast, and nothing really memorable happened either, aside from the cool scene where he walks up to Calderva, bats his bullets away, and then one shots him. |

It was a 4-issues storyarc coming right after an event Diggle was forced into and that had to be the story bringing him back from years of misery piled up on him.
What did you expect? The story was good enough, given these premises.
Heck, the so much praised Brubaker used to craft storyarcs consisting of ten issues each and with milestone issues (vol 2 100, 500 in them), and they weren't all this much better than this one, looking at everything. |

I found Reborn to be reeeally, really predictable for a DD book..
but at least this whole sadness-stuff is out of the way for some time.. I totally look forward to a little more swashbuckling Daredevil for a change.
and could someone explain, why Diggle was forced into Shadowland? Wasnt he always talking about it, as if it was his own idea? And where did you read that he was forced? Was that before, or after Shadowland dissapointed the fans? I mean.. I dont know much of Diggle's other work, but he never striked me as a genius writer.. _________________ Deodorant Cant Fix Ugly. |

Agreed, the only thing of Diggle's that pissed me off was Reborn. It was halfway back to the good old inner monologue Matt that EVERYONE loves, but I think you pinpointed it - it was predictable. For DD, it's like . . what does a cliche DD story in 4 issues look like? Answer: Daredevil Reborn. And that's a pretty lofty title for such a uneventful story. I thought it'd be epic but.. all four issues don't amount to one page of Born Again.
I too am looking forward to a return to what looks like Nocenti/JRjr style stuff. 80s style stuff and earlier.
Though I would've liked his exile to be a lot longer too.
That Reborn story didn't need to be 4 issues long, man. It had the emotional impact of one issue - could've/should've been done in one. Not that I praise 60s style storytelling but . . modern comics are sooo strung along. Read one of Miller's issues, it's like reading a whole arc today.
Yeah I wish we got more than that one glimpse at his exile. When Nocenti did it it was amazing. I could happily watch a walkin'-the-Earth 'Kwai-Chang Caine' Matt for years personally. Perhaps his exile was longer than was shown...just have to imagine it was so uneventful that we only saw the last 10% of it that turned him around. |
