I was thinking of picking up GREEN ARROW, just to read Ann Nocenti's return to monthly comics... any good? _________________ Kuljit Mithra

I am not reading Green Arrow, but I have not heard anything good about it on several podcasts. From what I heard, she inherited a train wreck. Surely, these things take time. _________________ Love is blindness, I don't want to see

Just read the first three issues, and I have to say I've got mixed feelings. This has NOTHING to do with Nocenti's writing BTW, which, especially in the first issue, I found to be as riveting, distinctive, original and even risque (as always). The issues are wordy (as you'd expect), have political leanings (ditto) and in many ways it was like reading a comic book from about 15-20 years ago. Thats Not A Bad Thing, in my book.
My problems come from the art, which was not up to much, and the fact that, when push comes to shove, I don't really care that much about the character, or certainly the train wreck of a reboot that DC have come up with here, anyway.
I care enough about Nocenti to pick up the next issue or two, just to see what she might be able to do. I'd LOVE to see her back on DD one day, now she's back in the loop. When do we start the campaign, Kuljit?
If they can bring back Becky Blake then anything is possible! |

I would have to say avoid it. Especially if you have fond memories of Nocenti's work. A preview via USAToday can be found here:

I only managed to get through the first two issues of her run. It was like she was trying to fit a hundred different ideas into every issue to the point that everything was feeling forced and unnatural. Sadly I like the general idea of the storyline and the direction in which she was going to take Green Arrow but the delivery was just horrible. I'm sure part of it was that Nocenti was taking over after 6 issues and had to do a bit of righting the ship before getting going. I hope it gets better and somebody here could maybe tell te rest of us but until that point I can't stress enough how much you should avoid this. |
