My favourite Waid issue to date. I have never ever seen Matt in a more vulnerable position, which makes his actions in this issue extremely heroic. Samnee did a great job with Matt's senses. |

This is the first issue of Waid's run that gives me hope for a restoration of the darkness and maturity that suits the character. Samnee's art is much more pulpy and expressive than Rivera's clean and mechanical look. Matt's suffering felt real, though I wish writers wouldn't again resort to his getting beaten up for the millionth time. And it points out the problem with his being in the Avengers. He's so much weaker than the others (Iron Fist was comparable but has been vastly strengthened) that he either floats uselessly in the background or needs to be rescued.
The visions were very well drawn, the echoes of Sister Maggie (how long since she's been around?) in the nurse were a nice touch, and Doom was more powerful for hardly being shown.
Bendis ,Miller, and Brubaker while my favorites, aren't the only DD writers I like... Nocenti did excellent work, as did the unfairly maligned Chichester . So I'll see where Waid goes with his big revelation. And if the next issue is something totally ridiculous like Henry Pym doing a Fantastic Voyage in Matt's head, I'll take back every good thing I just said. |
