I have been so against this series as a story but the preview art made me buy it in the end and to be honest it was pretty average, looked great at points but the story was a bit lacking, interesting end which gives us hope that its not going to be terrible.
What was awful was that they were basically saying Matt has no superpowers and that his radar etc is just 'training and focus', I have told you all for a while Bendis has no idea about Matts powers and here we finally have proof. The man has no clue. _________________ when walking just walk, when sitting just sit, above all don't wobble. |

Because of David Mack and Bill Sienkiewicz, I bought the first issue. I won't be buying any more.
On the plus side, it started out fine. I was enjoying being inside Ben Urich's head during his writing process. I felt Mack was behind much of this. It reminded me of Kabuki a bit.
On the downside...
SPOILER ALERT
Daredevil's murder of Kingpin is inexcusable. Everybody involved in this series has been involved with this character for a long time. They should know this character. They even say he stands for justice in this issue. So why, when he has Kingpin down, does he go in for the killing blow. He wouldn't. Then he says, "I'm sorry, but I've tried everything else..." or something like that. If you decided to kill, there are a number of things you obviously haven't tried. Matt would never abandon his belief in everyone's entitlement to their day in court. Never.
I am so sick of people thinking that Matt is a killer. They always point to #181 or Born Again, completely ignoring that in the former example his first instinct was to save a villain's life and in the latter his options were to either let another person die by machine gun fire every split second or to use the bazooka to blow up the helicopter. And don't even talk to me about the misbegotten mess that is Shadowland.
This is inexcusable. I'm assuming it was Bendis who came up with this story. You'd think there would be someone at Marvel standing up for the character and saying, "But Brian, he would never choose to kill." Obviously no one was saying that to Andy Diggle during Shadowland. What's wrong with people? |

I'm not disagreeing with the bad reviews. In defense, I think of this story as speculative, so I don't care so much about the killing controversy here. Even in a real story, it comes down to the writing for me. Shadowland was such loathsome dreck, that the killing part was the least of it. But no, I didn't need endless pages of men being beaten to death . And I'm holding out some hope that it wasn't really Matt, though that would mean some body switching absurdity.
Jansen did a good job, considering how thin the writing was. But I'm used to arcs being too stretched out (8 issues is probably too long) and first issues especially tend to be a let down. I'll see how it goes. |

too soon for guesses. I also couldn't figure out the continuity. It seems to date from a point within King of Hell's Kitchen, well before even the end of Bendis's run, rather than allow for anything that happened since then. |

I think its the Killing of Him that must be really HARD for most to take. I was pretty well floored by it.. I mean I can't imagine Superman or Batman being treated to a Stick through the Head.
Shocking to see a Loved character OFF'd like that! I mean come on this is the Daredevil Message Board of it all. So yeah there is that knee-jerk reaction.
Still I really liked this. Especially those cool scenes with the Kingpen at the end. It's explaining how it 'could go down' is all I'm thinking.
And the Mapone thing is interesting. I was digging that 'Sled' aside from the Reporter.
I don't mind a Sinister beat from the Daredevil, I'm not a purist like the rest of you are, I'd like to point out. I truly understand the 'upset' this sort of series must be causing true collectors of The Daredevil.
But from a purely outsider point of view, I'm liking where this is going. It's speculation... and is very interesting to see where they are taking it. |

I haven't read the issue yet so I don't know exactly how this idea is handled but Miller basically said this a long time ago during his run. The idea was further explored by Nocenti when Matt tries to teach that blind kid how to sense things.
I forget what issue it is but Matt loses his powers and Stick shows him how to get them back through focus, noting that the radiation ran out long ago. _________________ JC

Regarding whether its out of character for DD to kill Kingpin, this is set decades in "the future". Perhaps as DD got older he became more jaded and cynical, perhaps even losing his faith in the justice system. Perhaps all the tragedies in his life took their toll as he got older and his sense of idealism eroded away over the decades.
Its a bit hard to say its out of character for DD to do something in this book, when he is decades older and people often change when they get older. Batman in the Dark Knight Returns was certainly different then the regular Batman. |

After reading this today I can see why long time DD fans would be upset by the way his death was handled and his killing of the Kingpin. I decided to take it this story as a "what if" and not the definite ending of Matt's life/career and in that way I enjoyed the issue much more. I will read the rest as the mysteries of what happened to Daredevil after he disappeared and who this "new" DD are have me intrigued. I enjoyed the artwork and Ben's narration was good as well.
As for his killing of the Kingpin. It is definitly out of character for him but how I viewed it was maybe his off and on mental breakdowns he's had over the years have finally pushed him over the brink? Who's to say that given the chance during Born Again (#228) he might have actually killed the Kingpin even way back then? |

I don't think I should have to fill in blanks for Bendis while reading his comics. That's a major reason why I didn't enjoy his run.
Considering how far in the future this story allegedly takes place, why are we still talking about this breakdown? That is much different than Born Again, a complete story that showed the Kingpin induce Matt's breakdown, Matt hit rock bottom and begin his recovery in the space of seven amazing issues.

Miller strongly suggested that, but obviously that's not what happened, and he ended up telling a story of redemption and perserverence instead. Also, since the mental breakdown was such a fresh occurance, it was easier to follow and understand his demented thought process. With End of Days, while Ben Urich's thought process is interesting, it doesn't shed any light on Matt's, and since Matt has performed such an uncharacteristic act, it's as if the creative team is asking me to trust them and come back next month to see if it will make sense. To me, it's too big of a sin. I vote with my wallet, and all I can do is not give this series my vote. |

Despite the controversy, the art is dark and very interesting I thought. Much information with the panels on each page. |
