a lady friend of mine wants to get into the character so how do i approach this? i have the interest to read from Miller and Smith to Waid but not everyone does. She's into batman so
my thoughts were do the dark stuff first:
a)
Man without fear (origin tale)
Born again
Guardian Devil
Yellow (origin tale)
Parts of a whole
*this is still too much to read*
or do the fun stuff first
b)
Mark Waid's Daredevil as the jumping point with no priors.
it's great and fun but it will spoil the outting, Karens death, Milla's insanity, shadowland, etc. yes there still is the fun in reading about the prequels but there were so many good surprises.
what do you guys think? i'm lending the book(s) on Wednesday. Thanks. |

If shes into Batman, then go for the darker stuff. Those stories will make Bats look like a pussycat.
Just go from Man Without Fear, to Born Again (unless she wants a fuller story, in which case throw a couple of Karen issues to get her used to the character first), then Guardian Devil, and then Bendis/Maleev. You could even have her read Redemption at some point too. |

I would say let her start with the first Waid arc, then back up to the origin - "Man Without Fear" (for me, I haven't read "Yellow"). If she likes Waid, so much the better, as it seems to be the interpretation we're going to have for the foreseeable future. If she finds Waid's stories too light, then back her up to Bendis or Miller. I wouldn't start with Brubaker (actually, I DID, but that's another story) because he starts off where Bendis left, with Our Hero in prison.
Of course, you could just let her pick the one she wants...

If she likes Batman don't give her Mark Waid's run.If you do that you might well hand her a Spider-Man comic.Give her Man Withiut Fear or Born Again.Or Give her Frank Miller visionaries voulme 2 |

tone wise the light stuff isn't a problem as she likes spiderman too so this is really just about getting into the book. Problem is you can't understand or appreciate the character arc unless you read how **** his life was. and as i've said before the surprises along the way are cool. But yeah the Bendis stuff is amazing if your a batman fan and it remains my favorite. It just seems like a long list of books before you can even touch Bendis trades and i rather not give her something that feels like a marathon. Born again is going to be a confusing read for understanding Karen material apart from the master works. Yellow only works if you read it after guardian so i can't use that to show Karen's character. kingpins arc in Bendis only makes sense if you get parts of a whole in there too.
1) Man without Fear
2) Born Again
3) Guardian Devil
4) yellow
5) parts of a whole
this is fine? or too much?
if she likes this i'll throw her onto the Bendis track i guess. |

I don't like Man Without Fear as much as I used to, but it's okay to start off with. I would have her read Frank Miller Visionaries Volumes 2 and 3 before I give her Born Again. |

And I also think it's worth including Love's Labor Lost and Lone Stranger in with the pile too. |

I started with Guardian Devil. I was thirteen and just started buying my own comics, so that made me a lifelong fan. For a Batman fan I'd say Man Without Fear and go for any of the trades from there. My personal favorite is Yellow though.
She likes Spider-man? Yeah, just go for Waid. So I'd say Man Without Fear and Waid. Simple.
My original reading order:
1. Guardian Devil
2. Yellow
3. Man Without Fear
4. Born Again
5. Started reading Brubaker's run (was just starting)
6. Bendis
8. Miller's first run
7. Masterworks for Stan Lee's early issues and some vol. 1 issues for first appearance of Mister Fear, Typhoid Mary, etc. |

If she's into Batman, then give her all of Miller's work first. He has defined the modern Daredevil in much the same way he has defined the modern Batman. |

Congratulations gentlemen! She loved "Man without fear" and "Born Again" and we're moving onto Smith and Mack before Bendis. We now have another darediva in the cult. Thanks again for the objective and unbiased help, i appreciate it. |
