I definitely think he's up there, probably the closest comparison would be DC's Dick Grayson (Nightwing).

He might be. He's definitely one of the most helpful. I'm not so sure he's 100% pleasant to be around all the time though. Of course, that depends on what side of the law you're on. Wink

Sorry, but I get how the women on this board think of Matt as a nice guy, especially when it comes to his treatment of women who have loved him. As I've posted elsewhere, his history seems to suggest otherwise. He has abandoned them (Heather, Glorianna), cheated on them (Karen), and patronized them (Natasha).

I'll grant you this: Perhaps by the time he met Milla, he learned a thing or two about relationships.

I think you're forgetting an even nicer guy (who shares Matt's law offices...). Smile

But Franklin is not the nicest guy in the MU: he's the nicest guy in the entire comics multiverse Wink

I think this whole "niceness" thing needs to be elaborated on a little bit. When I think of Matt as being "nice," I think of it more as him being a guy with his heart in the right place who is genuinly trying to make the world a better place. I think of him as quite loyal and not as someone who gives up on people even when it doesn't look like they deserve a second chance.

On the other hand... I mean what I wrote higher up about him not always being pleasant to be around. I can picture him as someone who is quite often a little cranky (being constantly sleep-deprived and pushed to the edge probably doesn't help), and a little impatient. He has a mild streak of arrogance, and yes, he hasn't always treated his girlfriends with the respect they deserve. On the other hand, you have to look at the core of the character (kind of like a smallest common denominator of behavior), and what each writer has brought to the table. As a fictional character, all we have to go on is what the writers have contributed. BUT, at the same time you have to take into consideration that the book has been in print for almost 45 years. When Matt is being a complete chauvinist around Natasha, how much of that is Gerry Conway writing a story in the early 70's, and how much is that a reflection of the character (which would better be seen as the sum of all his protrayals by all writers)?

Taking "nice" to mean "trying really hard to make a positive change in the world," I would definitely say that he is one of the nicest characters. I also, as I've said before, imagine him to be quite charming when he wants to be. He's got good people skills without necessarily being overly talkative or a natural extrovert.

I think there's a pretty massive list of Marvel U characters who are "nicer" than Matt.

X-men readers could school me about it probably, but Professor Xavier comes to mind If I think to "a nice guy in the MU".

Yeah, he's not that nice. He's always had a "tough love" thing going on. Plus, recently it seems like every writer under the sun wants to "reveal" some shadey thing Xavier has done (sent a "secret" X-Men team to their deaths, trapped a fully sentient AI, etc.).

Yeah, Charlie X certainly has a few skeletons in his closet.

Yeah, but who hasn't?
Also, why would they want to reveal "shady stuff" about him if he wasn't so nice, at least apparently?

Well, anyway. Who could be said to be a nice guy...
Captain America?

I always thought Matt would come off as weird and quiet to the other heroes. He's always turning his back and "staring" into the distance while they're talking to him on rooftops and stuff. Always declining to join teams. An intense loner, in the Batman mold.

'Nicer' might be: Cap, Spidey; even Luke Cage and X-People like Kitty Pryde and Hank McCoy (even maybe the whole FF?) would certainly be more "approachable," I bet.

Yes, but because they don't realize the reasons behind Matt's attitude: the nature of his "powers" is not one which inclines him to socialize (for one, parties must be an agonizing experience for Matt's senses), and his very career as a hero started as a result of a great tragedy (the loss of his father, Matt's only family).

If you ask me why I am so endeared to Foggy is that, even when Matt is in a really bad mood, he does his best to reach him and see what's the matter with him (and maybe because, unlike other superheroes who only deal with Matt occasionally, he knows the high price Matt's life pays for being DD). That's why I like Urich, too.

This is turning into a very interesting topic. As a superhero, I agree that he's a loner. He just kind of does his own thing. As for coming off as weird... I guess he doesn't have much need for eye contact (thought he should know that other people do). Wink I don't agree that Matt as a person is a loner though. Like I mentioned before, he's not that upbeat, sociable extrovert type at all, and as such maybe a little unapproachable, but he does value relationships, in my opinon, friendships or otherwise.

Well, he did tell Lily Lucca that parties gave him a headache, so... I always thought his senses were an excellent excuse for him not to join any teams, although he's never (to my knowledge) given that as a reason. It's not like he's a stranger to gunfire or anything, but to engage in all-out armed battle as part of a team, doesn't seem to suit him nearly as well as what he's doing on his own.

Yeah, I think Matt needs some relatively normal people around for the balance. He can get much more from hanging out with them than the other superheros, I think. At the end of the day, his type of battle is much closer to the people in Hell's Kitchen than to the kinds of affairs the other costumes often deal with. I guess you could say he's the "superhero next door."

Personally, I think Matt relates much better to normal people and street-level heroes, or, say, people like Natasha (more the super-spy than the super-powered female) than to "cosmic" ultra-powered folk. The exception might be the spider-powered Peter Parker, with whom DD has always has (or, hum, in the light of OMD, used to have) a good rapport, but I feel this owes a lot to Parker being much the average Joe under his webbed mask, rather than Parker being a super-hero.
