What a great interview. I seem to remember not liking the arc that much but that interview almost saves it. It's nice to see a creator be so open with what he intended to do and why he did it. Plus, he sort of mentions that there was editorial trouble but doesn't try to blame the editors at all. Plus, he gets in a few good zingers. Good stuff. _________________ JC

Excellent interview, Kuljit. Now I'm going to go back and reread that arc, taking into consideration what SL had to say here. I didn't hate the arc, but at the time was just sort of puzzled by it seemingly coming out of left field.
Very, very good answers by Mr. Lobdell. _________________ Alice

Thanks Kuljit, its always interesting to get an insight into the creative process and what goes on regarding editors - I'll re-read this arc as well _________________ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi |

I posted a "thanks" before I even read the interview. Now, I have read it and I feel compelled to say thanks again, Kuljit! This was a great interview!
Back in the day, I bought the entire run of Generation X on EBay and mycomicshop.com, after reading issue #1. I loved the Buffy/Whedonish feel to Lobdell's Gen X and this was long before Whedon started writing Astonishing X-Men. Then, I was a big fan of Lobdell's Alpha Flight. (I am still very bitter about that getting cancelled after only 12 issues... ) ANYWAY, I'm a fan of Lobdell's and I loved seeing this interview aside from the fact that I always love to see another DD creator interview.
P.S. I liked Flying Blind. It was fun. Looking back, Kelly's DD, Lobdell's Flying Blind and Chichester #380 was the perfect end for my favorite DD era, before Smith jumped on. _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

I loved Generation X. The first four issues (especially the first issue) were pure genius. The AoA, Generation Next, issues were stunning. Then things got a little less genius. When Lobdell left things got reeeeeeaaaaaaally less genius.
One thing I'll never understand though is why Lobdell thought switching the love interest from Husk and Skin to Husk and Chamber was a good idea. In the early issues Husk and Skin were all cute and awkward. Then in AoA Husk and Chamber were and item. Then, bizarrely when things switched back Husk and Skin were over and Husk and Chamber were sort of a couple. Much less interesting.
Still, Lobdell's Gen X was awesome. I agree it was Josseseque. Even more impressive is that Lobdell was pulling it off with what were, for all intents and purposes, brand new characters. _________________ JC

I forwarded all your comments and questions to Scott Lobdell, and he wanted to respond...
Scott Lobdell says:
Awww, that is so sweet.
I should also mention that GENERATION X pre-dated BUFFY by a year or
two. So it might be more fair to say BUFFY was Lobdellesque. =)
(And don't try to use the movie as a buffer! The only thing it had in
common was the name Buffy!) GENERATION X celebrated its 10 year
anniversary two years ago, and Buffy only this year. Hmmm.
Regarding Husk/Skin vs. Husk/Chamber... I was trying to play around
with the hormoness of youth. I am not a big fan of two characters
meeting and declaring their love for each other -- and instead prefer
when relationships are messy, like in real life. I was determined at
the time to play around with perceptions: Jubilee and Synch becoming
so close that everyone but the two of them would think of themselves
as a couple. Skin attracted to Husk but feeling she'd never go out
with him because he was so freaky looking, and then looking on when
she wound up being attracted to Chamber who was, lets admit it, way
freakier looking than Skin. (Remember, Skin had the ability to
concentrate and maintain a human form.) I also thought it was
interesting that the drop dead gorgeous Paige found herself attracted
to the ultimate inaccessible male. I am certain it had something to
do with the fact her hard working Pappy died working the coal mines
taking care of such a large brood! _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Honestly, one of my least like Daredevil stories. but that being said, this was an interview worth reading. Especially enjoyed Scott's openess and the "SKS" comments.

Geez, I never realized that! I picked up both Buffy DVDs and Gen X comics well after they'd been years into it. So, I never realized Gen X started first and that definitely makes me love those early issues more.
Thanks for the follow-up, Kuljit! _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

Really great interview, he is a really funny guy actually. I almost laughed out loud at work at some of his comments.
I actually really liked this story and couldn't figure out why everyone disliked it so much. I do agree it did kind of come out of left field but it was really pretty cool. I loved his new suit in it too. I'm going to have to take it out and re-read it again too. _________________ "This isn't hell, but you can see it from here." -The Crow |
