Daredevil Message Board The Board Without Fear!

The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

This was a good ish.
DD was pretty hardcore, torturing Ox and all. Larry Cranston continues to be a truly evil man. |

I am enjoying the current arc quite a lot. There is a lot of psychological stuff going on that makes you feel edgy as you read. I want Milla's long nightmare of insanity to end, I want Lilly to find the redemption she seems to be seeking, I want Matt's personal life of happiness restored. But with only one issue to go in the arc, I just don't see how 22 pages of superhero action can achieve all that. This book is dripping with anxiety.
I am more and more fascinated with Lilly. At first she seemed a classic bad girl type. Then she meets Matt and sees herself through his eyes (ironic way to put it I know). She wants to change and inspire Matt to love her. Of course she's not strong enough to be the hero, she can't fight Fear, and becomes a pawn once again. The look of shame on her face when she tells Matt that Fear was coming back to give her her reward was heart breaking. Lark is a master.
So far we've seen that Brubaker understands character and suspense and that DD readers are a pretty mature bunch that deserve intelligent stories. The next issue we'll find out if he can deliver a great ending. A ending that could make this arc stand out as one the all time greats. |

Same here.

Personally, I don't expect everything to be wrapped up in the next issue. I feel that some issues will be solved, but other will linger as a subplot in future sagas (my personal guess: I'm afraid Milla won't be cured in #105, but this doesn't mean she'll be sane again in the future- hopeful Gloria-).
I was a bit angered at Matt being too late again, in spite of his desperate efforts. I think that Foggy's forlorn gaze as the cops take Milla resumes well the situation. So I must say that I liked Mr. Fear getting a "Surprise!" moment himself at the end of the issue... Much as I'd liked Matt to be the one beating the crap out of Cranston, I don't dislike the Hood being responsible of the coup. I confess that I wasn't the least tickled by the character (from other collections), but in his brief appearances in DD he comes up as a cool chess-playing cat (yes, he acts pretty feline).
Maybe what makes me sadder about the story is seeing Milla, who so far had been an spirited woman who didn't let blindness keep her from living an independent life, reduced to the role of helpless woman. Similarly, Lily, whom we could expect to have her own agenda, is similarly revealed as a pawn in fear's play. The saddest thing is that, as the saying goes, is that Lily's road to hell is paved with good intentions... come to think of it, she's been a pawn ever since her first appearance. As Markc has stated, I'd like her to be redeemed (and hopefully to become a strong girl in the process).
Since I am catching up with Brubaker's run on Catwoman, I'm aware that women as helpless damsels are not a staple of his writing, though it is true that neither Milla or Lily seem to have -right now- Selina's strenghth to fend by themselves... Still, we have other women in the DD cast, which I'd like to see kicking some ass in the near future (if only to balance Milla and Lily's helplessness): I think that Dakota are Becky can fit in that role.
Within all the grim n' grittiness There were moments of comic relief... well, at least, I laughed when the Ox said "Aw... Aw God... Not you too, Hood". I think Ox will recover quite soon, I mean Matt may have harmed sensibly a lot of Ox's nerve points, but since the nervous system is not Ox's forte (I mean, he surely has less neurones than the average goon), I don't feel he will be excessively affected: Still, "Looks like Daredevil's more hardcore than I thought"... Just read the last three issues.
Overall, the story arc is okay. But, The Hood is a major distraction to the story. I don't know if this story was originally plotted to include the Hood, or if origianally he wasn't in the story but the Hood was later added by Bru to, I don't know, give some added relevance to the mind of Brian Bendis and his ideas.
All I know is that The Hood is stealing some of Mr. Fear's thunder. It would suck if Bru builds up Mr. Fear in this tale (to a potential A list villain), only to reduce him (back to B list) by cowering to The Hood. I guess, we'll find out next issue. I think that, in the end, this story may have been better without the Hood's inclusion.

p.s. Gee, not many posts on this thread. Are we losing intrest in this arc?? |

I finally got a chance to read the issue. The manner in which DD torments Ox is just so diabolical. To think of lighting that torch, then mess with Ox in that manner, leaving no marks more than likely...wow. Ed Brubaker, you are a twisted man, and I love you.
Another thing that I liked was the scene where Matt comes home to find the nurse beaten by Milla. The way the scene is structured, with Matt smelling the blood, then discovering the woman, and then searching for Milla, is a good look into how Matt senses things. Nicely written and drawn.
The Hood is a bit perplexing to me. I need to know just how he fits here. So far, I don't get it. But there is next month! _________________ Alice

Pretty good issue, but I'm also, so far, confused by the Hood. I don't really know who that much about him, and I have no desire to pick up any Avengers books to find out. I'm patient though, so I'm sure I'll learn more about him in future Daredevil issues. I am enjoying Mr. Fear though.
A question though. Is this a different Ox from the Stan Lee days? I think the old Ox would have been able to break those chains once he woke up. |

I think this is part of his plan (or Bru's plans about him). In fact, the Hood in DD comes as a misterious, intriguing, character... what is he really up to?
Of course, in other series... hum... that's another story.
But I must say that I had my fears about the Hood playing a role in the current story, but so far Brubaker has moved well the piece. (IMHO) _________________ Gloria

I don't see the Hood as mysterious or intriguing. First, the guy looks silly. Second, I don't know who he is and I don't care to know (so far). So, far, he truly seems like a forced character in this arc. I mean, this story should have lead to DD confronting Mr. Fear. Not, some character in the periphery confronting Mr. Fear.

the arc is good, but it just doesn't hold me in the suspense that the previous arcs did. in previous arcs, DD was at the very top of my read list the week that it came out. with this current arc, sometimes i pull another book before DD. i am not unhappy with the currnet story, it's just "OK".
it's a great time to be a DD fan when you can complain about the current arc as being just "OK" |
