For those who are interested, myself and fellow SBC reviewer Chris Murman have a review of this issue up here:

Carmine Di Giandomenico's interview at CBR is quite informative too, it definitely sounds like this book is going to concentrate on Jack's heroic elements rather than his flaws.

Kuljit already linked to it from the front page, but in case you haven't seen it: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=10753

***SPOILERS***

That was one of the quickest reads I've had in a while (outside of something written by Brubaker). I was both surprised and a little disappointed when I turned the page and saw 'end of round 1'! I personally like how this mini started off. I really enjoyed the appearances by Josie, Turk, and most notably Maggie. What I liked just as much was the way that Di Giandomenico framed the couple of pages that Maggie appeared on to emphasize her involvement with the church. Looking forward to more looks like it will continue on the path of Jack trying to 'do what's right for Matt' which I think is the angle most of us were looking or hoping for.

WOW!

So many big questions were answered (for me at least) while the story was still very personal. I could go on about everything I loved in this issue but instead I'll just say that I loved everything about this issue. Very Happy

Yeah, I loved it, too! I had my doubts, 'cause this seems like a pretty well-explored section of DD's history and a character about which little could be changed or recast without serious repercussions in the continuity continuum, but it's tight, man.

1. I love the art, the expressions on the faces are phenomenal (I think our pal Mr. Wallace or his cohort pointed that out in the review linked above); the layout is cool, too.

2. Is is just me, or is there some implication that were Jack to know about Matt's ability to "take care of himself," he might make a different choice? Toying with ideas of honesty? Jack's unbending plan for his son backfiring?

Can't wait for the other issues.

So far, not good. So Maggie was not a nun when Matt was conceived? She was just some girl who turned religious out of guilt? That makes the origin LESS interesting, not more. The Josie tie-in was a cute nod, but Turk as a little boy was a reference I could have done without. Why do origin retellings always feel the need to tie in EVERYTHING? Maybe Jack should run into Typhoid Mary while he's at it.

A quick read for sure, and while the 4-round/4-issue structure is clever, my appreciation for the issue ended there.

Wow, that's a cop out and a half. I agree, way less interesting.

See and I really like this angle because it emphasizes just how important Matt's father was in bringing him up. This also makes Maggie more interesting and adds a new dynamic to the character. I may have had more sympathy for Maggie If she were a nun before conceiving Matt or if there were some other circumstance than just guilt, shame, etc. that made her leave. As it stands, Maggie is actually a negative influence in Matt's life and one very poor mother. (It is no wonder he only sees her when he has nowhere else to go. She is far from reliable.) Consequently, Jack is even more noble and strong than I originally thought him to be.

A careful rereading brought up a few details that people may be curious to check out on their own:

-name dropping on the trash cans as Jack and the Fixer walk down the alleyway... not that interesting, just a funny thing to note.
-Jack is being watched by a familiar character and a cohort in Josey's bar. Check out the people in the background. Not sure if this is just a offhand guest appearance or if it is supposed to suggest something...?

You know Forrest, I've never considered it from that point of view.
You're pretty right. Matt's mother has been a quitter. Practically the opposite of what Jack Murdock was and what Daredevil became.
