UNSCREWED!, the comic industry watchdog and charity, is now an officially registered non-profit organization and will be holding silent auctions at Wizard World Chicago (August 10th-12th) to benefit creators owed money by Tightlip Entertainment.
UNSCREWED! will be holding silent auctions daily at table 5608. It will also be providing merchandise and information about the organization, with acting president Tom Stillwell (writer of Honor Brigade) and director Jim MacQuarrie present.
The items up for auction include a sketchbook by Steve Rude (Nexus), original art by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), and a handmade doll by fantasy author Mercedes Lackey. Starting bids for each item will be listed at the start of each day, and anyone will be allowed to drop in and make a bid with the winner being announced by the end of the day.
It has been recently registered as a non-profit organization in Cook County, Illinois, under the name Unscrewed Incorporated. Respected comic creators Kurt Busiek (Astro City) & Colleen Doran (A Distant Soil) and author James Owen (Here, There Be Dragons) are the overseeing board.
Tom Stilwell stated: “We are holding this auction in order to get on-the-spot donations to benefit freelancers who’ve been screwed over. We also hope that by operating in public like this, we can spread the word about what we do and what we’re about. UNSCREWED! is a serious organization that deals with very real issues in this industry.”
UNSCREWED! was formed in late January 2007, in response to large-scale fraud against freelancers by Tightlip Entertainment, which called attention to the abuses and exploitation that goes on the comics industry; the prevailing sentiment seemed to be that getting ripped off early in one’s career was normal. UNSCREWED! was founded to refute this notion and to challenge publishers to operate ethically and honestly. It has since moved past focusing solely on Tightlip to focus on the wider industry.
It provides information about creator’s rights and resources; provides access to legal assistance to protect freelancers against fraud; publicly identifies fraudulent companies; and financially supports freelancers who have been victims of fraud through merchandise sales & auctions. UNSCREWED!’s auctions to date have raised over $4000. For more information, visit www.unscrewedcomic.com. |
If you are going to Wizard World Chicago, drop by and speak to Tom Stillwell, a really fine fellow and the creator of "Honor Brigade", a Spinner Rack Comics production. He's got all the information about Unscrewed, Inc.
