I was wondering if anyone had these hardcovers. And, I was wondering if they were worth getting. I haven't really read any Sandman (although I do have the originals of Death: The High Cost of Living), but as a comic fan I know it's highly acclaimed.
Also, if I were to buy stuff like Fables (I've got three issues I've been meaning to read--I sometimes let issues of comics pile up before I read them--except DD, which I read right away) and Y:The Last Man, would you recommend I get the single issues or the trades?? How often do Vertigo trades come out??
Anyway, just curious.

I have read the first six paperback trades but I don't know anything about the layout of the hardcovers. Regardless, Sandman is one of the most incredible comic works ever! I don't know where to begin on explaining why it is so good, partly because I can't think of anything to compare it to, except other works by Neil Gaimen. My only caution would be that some of the early stories can be very dark/violent.
...I need to get around to reading the rest of that series. _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

I read Fables in trade form. I started with the trades and never switched to issues. This was around the 4th volume coming out. About 2 trades a year get done. Maybe slighly more than a year since some trades have more than 6 issues collected. They are pumped out pretty quick though when an arc ends. There is also the 1001 Nights of Snowfall HC, which I stress is highly significant (acts as a Secret Files & Origins type of collection). This sits nicely on my bookcase with the trades. I'm reading Y this way too, but I'm only 2 trades in. If you are patient, you can save some money going the trade route. Vertigo trades are the best in this manner. Significant savings.
As for the Absolute Sandman collections, there are 4 of these in the works. The 1st is out now. The 2nd is solicited for November I believe. The rumour going around is that the 3rd is to be solicited much quicker than the gap between the 1st and 2nd. I had all the trades. I sold them all to a friend for a bargain. I love this story very much. I was sold on the Absolute editions mainly because they are recoloring this work with the most advance up to date digital process and doing so with care. Of course, the oversized pages are great, but these new colors are breathing new life into this story. I'm sure if you google this, Newsarama had a story up a year or so ago that showed an example of the old coloring versus the new coloring. Seeing this in your hands will knock your socks off. The DVD-type extras are great too. Gaiman's sketches are all there. The original proposal for the series. Even when you remove this from the case, you'll be amazed at the detail that went into to outside binding. It looks like an 18th Century dictionary. Something very old, yet brand spanking new.
Hope this helps somewhat.

I'm all about Vertigo and all about trades so it's no surprise that I'm all about Vertigo trades. Especailly since they really do pump them out after an arc ends.
The only vague downside I can even make up is that there's probably something lost in the Y trades. BKV loooooooves his cliffhangers and sometimes it's a little silly in trade form. That is, every 20 pages THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HEAD FALLS OFF but then it turns out it didn't really.
I'm loving Fables in trade form. The only downside to that is that I caught up pretty quick (it is such a good series). I picked up Sons of Empire a couple weeks ago and all the sudden realized that this is the first time that I'll have to wait six months for more Fables. Needless to say I burst in to tears on the spot.
I haven't gotten into Sandman yet but I know I should. I think when Y wraps after the next trade I'll start buying Sandman trades one at a time. _________________ JC

Sons of Empire was fantastic!
Fables is my favorite Vertigo book that is currently being published. I am really excited about their Un-Men book that is about to hit the shelves shortly (Aug. 8th). I'm going to pick up the first arc in issue form. If its good, I'll sell the issues and switch to trade. this seems to be my buying pattern for Vertigo books now.

As kind of a person that has only really browsed the Sandman comic in the past and doesn't know a lot about it but has liked what he saw and heard great things about it, I was curious how many issues are reprinted in each volume? I know there are about 80 issues of the comics (I think?) What do these books cost about?

What's this Un-Men you speak of? |
"Breakout writer John Whalen and Eisner-nominated artist Mike Hawthorne (THE EXTERMINATORS, Queen and Country) bring chilling new life to THE UN-MEN — the former SWAMP THING adversaries created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson — with a series that explores what it means to be a freak in a society filled with gawkers.
They say the freaks come out at night. But in Aberrance, U.S.A., freaks are big business. On the board of directors sit the freakiest freaks of all — birthed in the profane laboratories of Anton Arcane — THE UN-MEN.
In this new, ongoing series — masterfully mixing gritty noir, grindhouse horror and gallows humor — an albino agent known as Kilcrop is dispatched by the government to solve the murder of a sideshow attraction called "The Gill-Boy." To uncover the truth, Kilcrop must infiltrate Aberrance, where society's most misshapen outcasts find their own kind of freedom. But with the original Un-Men in charge, Kilcrop must confront a corruption far deeper than the mysterious death of a man who breathes through his neck. And he must deal with his growing love for a one-armed, angel-winged beauty named Niko — an attraction that could prove fatal. The truth he discovers may be the secret hidden within his own outsider's soul."
Taken from the Vertigo site.

Thanks. |
Absolute Vol.1 collects 1-20.
Absolute Vol.2 collects 21-39.
They both retail for $99 US.
The series, itself, was 75 issues long.
Hope that helps.

Amazon has them for about $62.
Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll go ahead and order the Volume 1 Sandman.
And, I'll look for those Y:The Last Man trades. I've seen them over at Talesofwonder.com. And, I'll probably go the trade route.
Much appreicated.
Oh, and any other Vertigo suggestions to read??

I really enjoy 100 Bullets. I read the first 3 tpb and I was automatically hooked. It's weird and confusing at times but it is so well written. Also, you have to absoleutly read Preacher if you haven't. One of the best series ever written and will automatically hook you. |

What he said. I enjoy 100 Bullets as well, but it is a little harder to follow.

I would also recommend Scene of the Crime, by Brubaker and Lark.
I used to collect Preacher, Human Target and Invisibles when they were coming out.
I collect Y and Fables in trades, and collect 100 Bullets, DMZ and Scalped in regular format.
I started collecting Sandman with the Season of Mists hardcover, and I was in university studying Paradise Lost in English class at the same time. If you've read Season of Mists, you'll understand why that was cool.
I tried American Virgin, and Testament, but couldn't get into them. _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Oh yeah! Good one!
Pride of Baghdad was a good read. A little overrated, but still worth the purchase. I think a softcover will be solicited shortly. Maybe holdout a little for this one. The art alone is outstanding. Brian K Vaughan and Niko Henrichon (A Canadian!)
WE3 is an absolute must in my opinion. Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. There is a reason this picked up many awards. Animals programmed by the government to be killing machines for the army. A great book I return to often.
V For Vendetta is a book that often gets overlooked when Alan Moore's name gets mentioned (Watchmen). This is a staple for anyone having a Vertigo collection of any size. I really like Lloyd's art on this. I was very fortunate to meet David at SDCC '06 and obtain a nice "V" sketch. A really nice guy.
