Okay, so I'm totally enjoying Y:The Last Man (in fact, I haven't had this much fun reading a comic in forever). Hell, even my wife is hooked and she doesn't read comics (well, until now!). Anyway, I'm just about to start Volume 6.
I've also started the first volume of Fables. Another very entertaining read (heck, other than DD, I don't know when I'm going to have time for my other comics).
Now, I know Preacher has had very good reviews. Even by some of you here on the board. I know jc likes Preacher, but I've always had the feeling (perhaps, incorrectly) he might like it because it was sacrilegious or something--as I don't know much about Preacher, other than something about him hunting "God" down. Now, I don't mind sacrilegious stuff, but I don't think something is great just because it's sacrilegious. So can anyone tell my why (without giving away like major spoilers) I should get Volume 1 of Preacher when I order the next two volumes of Y and the next two of Fables??

Preacher has great character developments.
The 3 main "heroes" (Jesse Custer, Tulip and Cassidy) are getting a deep and rich background all along the series and in the end, you really care for the characters.
But I think you should try at least TPB 1+2.
If you only read TPB 1, you might feel it's just violent or sacrilegious stuff. But there's more than that with Preacher.
Some episodes are dealing with pain, loss, redemption, forgiveness, friendship in a really great manner.
Okay, some other episodes (or scenes) are gore / trash extravaganza. Some characters can really be disgusting.
But all in all, it's really worth reading this series.
It has great dialogues, solid art and great stories.
And the overall plot is really well built as you can feel Garth Ennis ended the series properly not because it had to be cancelled or so. The end is a thousand times more satisfying than ... let's say most of Bendis story-arc (where you're led to think that things are building into something and then... pshhht)
Preacher is really worth the ride !
And, rjg, some stories are taking place in Texas ! _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

I think Preacher was one of my favorite series of all time. It has such enjoyable characters and like Blind Alley said you really do care for them. Not only is there alot of great story but it also has a very funny dark sense of humor. And since it's a Garth Ennis book you know that there will be some of the craziest and most genius characters you will ever see. As for the sacriligious thing, it's not being sacriligeous like some think. It's really just keeping an open mind. Kind of like Dogma, many people that the movie was blasphemy at the highest all it was doing was, like it says before the movie, even God has a sense of humor look at platypuses. So, you have to take it with a grain of salt, it really is a good book, one of the best in my opinion. |

Y: The Last Man. What can I say about Y: The Last Man? Okay, nothing for now. Just promise me that once you catch up (I just finished volume 9) you repost your thoughts.
At this point I'm just copying every Fables review ever but watch out. Once you finish volume 3 there's no going back. Not that there's any big turning point in that volume or anything but once you're that far in the whole thing just feels so real that no rational person could stop reading the series. Oh, and it just keeps getting better.
As for Preacher. Um: Buy Preacher! Buy Preacher! Buy Preacher! Volume 1 will get you into the style of the book and introduce you to the characters. Volume 2 will buy your soul. The other thing with Preacher is that it's so well executed that it's almost unbelievable. It starts solid, stays solid and ends solid. Without question it's the best series I've ever read. The ending is so satisfying it's unreal.
As for the sacrilegious thing. The weird thing is that it really isn't sacrilegious for the sake of it. Actually, the really weird thing is that it's actually a highly moral book. At it's core it's really about standing for something (and that something isn't even anti-religious really). The series starts out about Preacher hunting down god, and that's sort of the narrative tool that drives the plot forward from time to time, but it really, really, really isn't about that.
Finally, there's no doubt that Y is based on Preacher. It has the same "core cast go on a journey" feel to it (heck, Yorick even has a "**** Communism" lighter). If you like Y, you will love Preacher.
And if you like anything you will love NextWave. But that's a whole different thing. _________________ JC

No case needs to be made for Preacher. Really. The book sells itself. The good news is that this'll be a Vertigo series that you'll likely not have to fight over with the wife. She should be repulsed enough to stay away. But then again, who knows.
I'm glad to see all the fun you've been having with the Vertigo line. My wife loves Fables and Y as well. Don't forget to give WE3 a shot. That one is pretty insane (a movie next year?).
