While I must say I was slightly disappointed (for an entire 5 seconds) when I flipped this monster issue open and found that 2/3 of it turned out to be reprints of volume one issues # 90 and 91, this was totally made up for by the continuation of Brubaker's great storyline and Lark's artwork with the guest art pieced in as DD's halucinations! The hardcover-like extras at the end were also a nice little touch. I then realized that the reprints of 90 and 91 in fact included the first appearance/story of the Larry Cranston incarnation of Mr. Fear. I think this is a great touch considering his place in the current story, especially to those who may not have had access to these issues previously (I myself just read them for the first time about a week ago in Essential DD Vol. 4).

All in all I'd say this lived up to my expectations (despite my initial snap reaction), and as is the case each month, I'm left counting down the month long wait until the next issue.

Yeah, the main story IS double-sized, too, which would normally be a dollar more anyway.

But I'm glad people are noticing the Mr Fear reprints. I picked those myself.

It may be double sized, but it reads just as quick as a regular issue. Any way you look at it, well worth just the extra $1.

Although I normally don't appreciate spending extra for reprints of issues I already have, these 2 issues did fit with the overall theme and drew a nice contrast to the happenings in the current arc. I read a review on silverbullet that mentioned that the current story, while borrowing from past tales, still appears quite fresh and I couldn't agree more. Although the momentum of the story seemed to bog down a little, it was certainly for a good cause, fitting all those great guest artists in. I was particulary appreciative of Bermejo's work. I don't normally see his stuff, except on covers. And JR and Gene Colan are my 2 absolute favorites. I realize that you have to draw the line somewhere, no pun intended, but I would have loved to have seen JR Jr. and Mazzuchelli (Sp?) featured as well. Still, it was worth my hard earned shekels and I can't wait to see where this will take Matt, Milla and us.

Lark and Gaudiano - Holy sweet Sally! I think I have my two favorite pages by them in here. Its when the building blows up and the next page. The coloring nails it.

All of the Bermejo stuff and his variant cover... killer! I can't put into words what it is like for me to see Bermejo interiors on DD. Mind blowing!

Romita Sr. and Milgrom - Those 2 pages really suprised me the most. John, after all of these years, still has the chops. Seriously, this is the magic. What a rush it is to see this! Plus, I think that "love is fear" line was the best written moment in the book. Well, "get the car, asswipe" comes pretty close too. Razz

The Djurdjevic stuff was a treat as well. Especially that last page of his.

Sienkiewicz owns the Elektra look. Which reminds me, I really need to look for a sketchbook of his.

Maleev owns Milla. Well, obviously. Wink

His DD in yellow is pretty sweet too. I think the origin twist in this dream sequence was a great idea.

Ed, tell me you've got this all mapped out to the big #500 party in 20 more. You'll be around right?

The "Previously In" section gave away a little more than I would have liked, since it made explicit was was only suggested in the previous issue, and ruined the end of this issue a little.

Should we add the homeless lady to the "Matt's Love Interest" section? :)

I'd read some so-so reviews about this issue (on CX, for instance) so for me it's been a good surprise because I really enjoyed it.
The guest-artists are well used.

My favorite parts were :
the scene with Karen :
"Love is Fear"
the scene with Battlin Jack :
"can't be the man without fear if you let people in, Matt, but can't be a man at all if you don't"

Both scenes rang so true to me...

I read a few reviews who seemed to like the book overall, but complained that the plot didn't move forward or something. As a writer, I think character is plot, so I kind of always disregard complaints like that. Writing isn't about constant forward movement of events. It's about the characters.

Very good writing, and a visual treat. I bought 2 covers myself (Berjemo and Djurdjevic), 2 of the best DD covers ever.

I wonder if some of the other plot elements from the reprints will be revisited. Things like Project Four, San Francisco, Danny French , Black Widow. I understand the Project Four story line was pretty well resolved in #94, along with the death of Danny French, but heck, this is comics! Anything can be brought back, even Larry Cranston.

I still haven't had a chance to read the issue (gasp!), but I was wondering if Over the Edge #1 was considered to be a part of the reprints, since it explains how Cranston survived and started teaching at that college...
