I'm always amazed at how little the average American knows about current events, but will have a vast storehouse of knowledge when it comes to the goings on of Britney, Paris, or Anna Nichole's baby.
I think, back in the 1930's, reporting on the personal lives of professional athletes and movie stars, helped take people's minds off of the depressed economy and filled the void created by not having any royalty of our own. Of course, back then, most of what was reported about the lives of actors, was manufactured by the studios that employed them. But over the years, especially after Watergate, the reporting of celebrities' personal lives became more and more intrusive and became a huge industry unto itself.
My personal opinion is, I couldn't care less about who Jennifer Lopez is currently sleeping with or what substance Lindsey Lohan is currently addicted to. I prefer that one's private life be kept private, yours, mine and everybody's, but I don't think we'll ever be able to go back to those days again. _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |
