So why did I nominate #169 ?
For many reasons I'm gonna list below :
- it has DD fighting Bullseye (twice !) in the great Frank Miller style !
- the 2 movie-geeks analizing Maltese Falcon provide a good comic relief
- there's the cool scene where DD focuses his hearing sense to locate one of Bullseye hostage (DD can locate a man who coughs in NYC during the winter : how cool is that ?)
- in the subway, DD saves Bullseye from the train (whereas in the movie...)
- the final speech of DD with Manolis is very telling about DD (who he is, what he stands for)
- It's one the first DD tale that I've read and that stayed with me for years. (The copy I had was a french translation with missing panels due to censorship).
In the early 2K, I wasn't reading DD anymore.
One day, I came across the DD : visionaries 2 in a book store.
It was collecting #169 and other great issues (the one with Elektra, for instance).
I didn't read much english comic-books at the time but I bought it anyway.
It was this book that made me fall back into DD fandom. _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Well, I'll be damned, but this was as well the one that got me hooked into DD!
Poor Manolis! He was a good secondary character!

I loved that bit, too! Nowadays, most people associate Frank Miller's work for over-the-top (parodic?) hard-boiled stuff, but what I ooved about his DD is that it had a lot of humour in it, along with the drama.
The two geeks in the movie theatre are a good example of it... I also remember Foggy getting the Cash out of JJ Jammeson in another issue.
Darn, I'd love to see more humour in DD again! _________________ Gloria

Yeah, I like this issue (#169) too. The whole idea of Bullseye having a brain tumor and seeing Daredevils everywhere is really quite funny. At the same time you never forget what a seriously scary guy Bullseye is.
The subway scene is also a classic. While DD has the upper-hand in most combat situations (as long as he manages to stay on top of his game and isn't up against a foe with much greater strength) this is one situation where he's in over his head and keeps going anyway. Very "daredevilesque."

Yes, I agree that humor in proper doses is a good thing from time to time. Besides, I think Matt has a pretty good sense of humor that we at least get to see a glimpse of every now and again. However, compared to Peter Parker's, his is much more subtle and less obvious, which I think is a very good thing. No offense to Spidey, but jokes are much funnier when you don't make a big deal out of them in that "Oh, watch me be funny!" kind of way.
Anyway - back on topic - "Devils" is a good issue and it gets my vote. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Matt pulling Bullseye off the tracks is a classic moment so I'm going with Devils. _________________ JC

"Devils" really has everything you could ask from a DD story. It has Daredevil bravely fighting despite adverse odds and selflessly helping who is in trouble; a storytelling with the magistral pace and commentary of the golden age Frank Miller; the hero facing the tough decision saving a killer or let him die; a dramatic fight scene. Also, a small dose of humor (love the introductory page, when Matt suddenly abandons the interviewer upon learning of Bullseye's escape).
Regarding "Burn", it has some good points, like the divergent views on the redemption of a man between Daredevil and Black Panther, with Daredevil (in my book) proving himself morally superior to the king of Wakanda.
Besides that, the story is a little rushed, with the writer hammering a bit much on the aspect of gambling as a social problem.
Also, I found the idea of the Wakandan black guy in a golden flying power armor a bit silly.
In the end, my vote goes to "Devils" (but in fact there was no competition from the beginning if you ask me). |

"Devils" is just the better tale. DD's exchange with Manolis, alone, is enough. Great insight. And, great action, to boot. Bulls going REALLY bonkers is cool too.

So, I see #245 got three votes but no post to explain them...
Anyone to defend this issue or share the reasons he likes this issue better ?
Next showdowns will start soon (tonight or tomorrow).
Prepare the "defense" of your favorites and go re-read your back issues ! _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Well, I nominated #245 so I guess I had to vote for it, but it was pretty to argue against #169, which is of course a stone cold classic. |
