I definitely think he's up there, probably the closest comparison would be DC's Dick Grayson (Nightwing).

He might be. He's definitely one of the most helpful. I'm not so sure he's 100% pleasant to be around all the time though. Of course, that depends on what side of the law you're on. Wink

I think this whole "niceness" thing needs to be elaborated on a little bit. When I think of Matt as being "nice," I think of it more as him being a guy with his heart in the right place who is genuinly trying to make the world a better place. I think of him as quite loyal and not as someone who gives up on people even when it doesn't look like they deserve a second chance.

On the other hand... I mean what I wrote higher up about him not always being pleasant to be around. I can picture him as someone who is quite often a little cranky (being constantly sleep-deprived and pushed to the edge probably doesn't help), and a little impatient. He has a mild streak of arrogance, and yes, he hasn't always treated his girlfriends with the respect they deserve. On the other hand, you have to look at the core of the character (kind of like a smallest common denominator of behavior), and what each writer has brought to the table. As a fictional character, all we have to go on is what the writers have contributed. BUT, at the same time you have to take into consideration that the book has been in print for almost 45 years. When Matt is being a complete chauvinist around Natasha, how much of that is Gerry Conway writing a story in the early 70's, and how much is that a reflection of the character (which would better be seen as the sum of all his protrayals by all writers)?

Taking "nice" to mean "trying really hard to make a positive change in the world," I would definitely say that he is one of the nicest characters. I also, as I've said before, imagine him to be quite charming when he wants to be. He's got good people skills without necessarily being overly talkative or a natural extrovert.

X-men readers could school me about it probably, but Professor Xavier comes to mind If I think to "a nice guy in the MU".

Also, why would they want to reveal "shady stuff" about him if he wasn't so nice, at least apparently?

I always thought Matt would come off as weird and quiet to the other heroes. He's always turning his back and "staring" into the distance while they're talking to him on rooftops and stuff. Always declining to join teams. An intense loner, in the Batman mold.

'Nicer' might be: Cap, Spidey; even Luke Cage and X-People like Kitty Pryde and Hank McCoy (even maybe the whole FF?) would certainly be more "approachable," I bet.
