Aside from the fact that I thought the issue should have been called "Blood of the Tarantula featuring a guest appearance by Daredevil," I thought it was pretty good. Nothing spectacular though. It had too much of an origin story by numbers feel to it, and I felt that Matt was a little OOC at the end (not in looking the other way specifically, but in the way he expressed himself in doing so).

What I liked about this was the art, the way it was neatly squeezed in continuity-wise between #106 and #107 (Matt still not going to work, presumably, but a little more focused), and the way it felt like we got to know Carlos a little better. A decent read, but I don't feel like I truly had my DD fix this month.

I think it was a sound issue. Good art and solid story... maybe not too original, but for all the DeFalcoists who complained about Brubaker's Black Tarantula not being the proper one, here some explanation is provided as for why such a mighty, superpowered crimelord would like to change his life.... Time for a Carlos mini?

Dd is just a guest artist here: but it's ok for me, as I got my monthly Foggy fix (and no plaid bowtie this time Razz )... Now seriously: it is an interesting glimpse about Matt's life is post-"Without Fear": surely with was has happened to him, and with all the SRHA stuff going on, he's no longer the same Murdock: Some have commented that the old Matt would have prevented BT from doing some things he does... And yet the current Murdock possibly is not as caring about criminals being harmed: Matt is not the Punisher, nor the Black tarantula, but I'd say that, right now, he's more inclined to weigh own his own actions, trather than judge Carlos' acts.

Just like Marvel got people to buy David Mack's Echo series by labelling as "Daredevil," Marvel is getting people to buy a Black Tarantula one-shot by doing the same thing. It's dishonest marketing plain and simple.

As a Black Tarantula comic, which is what it is, it's pretty good. If you care about the depiction of Daredevil in this, though, you should be disturbed. Black Tarantula kills criminals, and, after a brief debate, Daredevil lets him go. Not very heroic. Daredevil has never portrayed himself as judge, jury and executioner, and, until recently, has not let others (like the Punisher) do it. Gloria argues that he may be less inclined to uphold the law after the events in Without Fear. If that's true, it makes him harder for me to root for.

Well... It's only a theory: I agree with most people that Matt wouldn't, in normal circumstances, let BT go as he does. But he has truly been through a lot in the last years.

In fact, I wondered if the Murdock we used to know would have let Punisher go his way after the escape from Ryker's in "The Devil in Cell Block D": at that point he was also in a very tight spot, mentally (he had lost someone, etc...)

Another thing about that (DD letting BT get away) that I think makes him handle things differently than if he were dealing with the Punisher is that Matt probably has very high hopes for Carlos being completely reformed. If he didn't, things could (should) have worked out very differently. What I didn't like at all about that scene was the "Well, keep a low profile" attitude. I totally buy that Matt might look away once, and just let it slide, but when he says what he does at the end, that's almost like an endorsement for BT to go on and do the same thing again. What Matt was actually saying bothered me much more than the events in that scene.
