There's lots and lots of boo hooing about Marvel's treatment of Elektra post-Miller (rgj!). And I understand bits of it (I think her coming back was good...becoming a dancer? Less good). However poorly Marvel has treated her, however, what they've done to Nuke simply puts all that to shame. I was cruising around wiki and stumbled upon this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuke_%28Marvel_Comics%29

Comon, give it a read. It's ridiculous. I won't even get into all the amazing ways it undercuts the character Miller created. Let's just have a moment of silence and pretend it doesn't exist.

Yeah, when I read this whole "origin" and how they brought Nuke back... (and what became of him at the end, which is really silly), it really lessens the whole scene in Born Again where DD drops the "dead" Nuke on Urich's table.

As an aside, when I was writing Nuke's profile for the MKE, no one at Marvel would believe me when I said Nuke died in Born Again.

While it was previously believed that the red pills Nuke took affected his mental state, sending him into his bloodthirsty rages, the Wolverine: Origins series reveals that these pills are placebos, suggesting that Nuke lives in a constant state of increased adrenaline, but doesn't know it. The pills, therefore, trigger his violent behavior, but the effect is purely psychological.

The above bit is the only thing I liked of Nuke's "return". Otherwise, it was total shame, and unnecessarily lessened the importance of his appearence in Born Again. And all of this just to give Wolverine a character to play with in his other ongoing series.

Like the enchiladas Joey Q. ate a few hours ago, Marvel is going down the toilet. I'm actually down to Daredevil and X-Factor (and I'm not excactly killing myself to get these as soon as they come out as I used to be--nothing agaisnt Bru or Peter David, it's just that I now time my monthly trip to the comic shop based on the Vertigo/DC titles coming out). Marvel doesn't interest me anymore. And, it comes down to leadership. Current Marvel writers are taking things that were once great (or really good) and just making up unnecessary crap about it. The Nuke stuff was really bad. I mean, WHY? Why do you have to use Nuke here? And, make him stupid. They even crapped all over Bushwaker, no, not the greatest character of all time, but much more interesting as originally conceived by Ann Nocenti.

Oh, and Wolverine sucks too.

omg, it's not bad, it'd even worst than that !
a cyborg ? placebo pills ? nothing in this page does make sense.
Has Marvel hired some drunken / alcoholic writers to write wolverine because even a 6 years child can't write something like that.

Gotta disagree.
Nuke ran his course in Born Again.

Other than his not really being dead, nothing that they have done with him since really violates anything that Miller did.

We always knew that he was a government created super-weapon, so Cap and Wolverine stepping up and feeling responsibility for him is great.

And then with Logan actually BEING responsible for what Nuke became, what a great use for a minor character like Nuke.

Though Origins is a bit over drawn out at times, it is a good comic book. In it, we see the cause of all of the self-loathing that Logan has been showing all these years. What he did to Nuke...THAT is why he hates himself.

So, now when you re-read Born Again, you know that Logan is partially responsible for ll of that.

This is how re-conning should be done.

at the end of Born Again there is no certainty that Nuke is dead... Although I don't know how they revived him so that may have something to do with it...
