I'm trying to expand my horizons beyond Daredevil and Immortal Iron Fist. So I picked up The Dark Avengers, Captain America, and The Punisher today.
Anyway, I'm kind of digging the Dark Reign stuff. I didn't really read any of the secret Invasion tie ins. But I am confused on what Avengers book is actually the Avengers. Theres the Mighty Avengers, The New Avengers and Avengers Initiative.
Whats really the difference? Kind of confusing. |

Mighty Avengers is the lighter, more old-fashioned Avengers book. New Avengers is the more edgy, anti-establishment Avengers. And Avengers: The Initiative concentrates on the new recruits, the Avengers-in-training.
New Avengers is seen as the flagship book, but each book offers a slightly different take on the Avengers concept. |

I picked up The New Avengers today. It was alright, even though it wasn't the newest issue. I'll see if it grows on me.
I kind of do like the Dark Avengers though. Does anyone know how long its going to run? |

If I understand Marvel's reasoning correctly, because the Avengers titles are among their best-selling ones, they will feature the $3.99 price tag. Quality for your buck, as it were.
This is one reason why I'm dissatisfied with Marvel. I'm a long-time Avengers reader. I want to read the Avengers. But why the need to split them up like this? (Face it, the Avengers are the X-Men books of the New Century)
Mighty is the closest to the old-school vibe I enjoy but how well or long can Slott maintain it?
How long Dark Avengers runs would appear to be dependent on how/when Dark Reign ends. |

Marvel is insane. They are clearly trying to milk the Avengers for all they are worth. Sadly, it looks like this nonsense might spill over into X-Men titles. Today they released a pic of the "Dark X-Men". Looks like a similar idea with a "dark" team. Too bad it makes no sense at all. The X-Men are only sort of a team in the first place. They're X-Men because they say they are. How does a "dark" team take over. Even if villians replaced the X-Men the X-Men would still be the X-Men. You know?
I feel like Marvel just doesn't get the X-Men any more. Or maybe they just don't quite fit in the new Averngers centric Marvel U. Like with Civil War when the party line was "the X-Men are neutral". Which made exactly zero sense.
I think it would be interesting to figure out why there's been the switch from X-Men to Avengers in the last 10 years. I'd be good money that it has something to do with the USA's move to the political right and the generally higher profile of the government and the military. Maybe now that Obama is in the X-Men will become more popular again. _________________ JC
