DAREDEVIL: GUARDIAN DEVIL

By Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, this first tale from Volume 2 under the Marvel Knights banner had Matt Murdock dealing with a separation from Karen Page, and a mysterious guest who may be the cause of a battle between heaven and hell.

Except for some odd character moments, this was a decent DD story. The choice of villain was interesting and different which made for an entertaining battle at story's end. Q's art really helped elevate the story. I rate it a 3.

I was caught between a 4 and a 5, but gave it a 4 because it's not Born Again. I don't understand why it's so reviled. This is the story that got me into DD. When I was a kid my parents would buy me Spider-man comics at garage sales. When I was 13 I had enough money to start buying my own comics and read online that Mysterio died in a DD comic. I picked it up and never looked back. It's a great story that lead to even more great stories by Bendis, but I would like for volume 3 the introduction of a more stable love interest. Really I would think Echo, but that won't happen. Maybe Matt and Elektra can cut the crap and get together like Batman and Catwoman. Not likely either...

Dreck. Plot holes all over the place, too-cool-for-school dialogue and a lame ending that finally laid bare that Smith had no idea what he was doing from the get-go. Of course to top it all off Smith kills Karen just so this dumb story will have lasting significance. Altogether pathetic.

Care to elaborate on the plot holes and what about the ending you don't like? Not being confrontational, just never heard anyone specifically state what they don't like about Guardian Devil.

I re-read the thing a few years ago and wrote a large post about it then (in basic disbelief that anyone still considered it passable let alone good). I tried to find the post but couldn't.

In any event, I remember there being tonnes of little stuff, plots holes and stuff that bugged the heck out of me. One example that killed me was the shot of the Kingpin saying "nicely done" or something when he reads about Bullseye killing Karen. Seems like it makes sense because it's Kingpin being impressed that Bullseye killed Karen; it was a good way to get at Matt. BUT, Bullseye didn't kill Karen on purpose (as in he didn't hunt her down or anything) and he certainly didn't do it as an attack on Matt. She just shows up and he kills her because that's what he does. So what? Well, the problem is that now the shot of the Kingpin is actually a shot of him being mistaken; of him misreading the situation. Sure, the Kingpin could be mistaken but why are we being shown this? Why did Smith, who knew all this put that in there? Because he's both stupid and sloppy, that's why. There's a tonne of other stuff in there like that.

Oh yeah and the AIDS thing? What was that about? Karen shows up and says she has AIDS but then she doesn't but did?

As for the end, it comes down to this: literally anyone could have shown up when Mysterio did. The point of fiction or drama or whatever is that you're supposed to be rooting for something and against something. Usually it's really neat when there's a twist ending or whatever and then you can go back and see all the clues you missed. There were no clues. Mysterio just bombs in from the sky and drops a bunch of exposition and then dies. That's not interesting in the slightest.

On a more personal dislike level, I couldn't stand all the name dropping, etc.. Like characters mentioning Dazzler or Mysterio mentioning Kraven. It was like Smith was jumping up and down trying to show off all the Marvel lore he knew. I know this is kinda his thing since all of his fans seem to be obsessed with being in the know and exclusive and whatever but if you're not into that (i.e. you're not 13) it wears pretty thin pretty quick.

So, yeah. That's why it sucked.

I was quite disappointed by the guardian devail arc. I've read it three times, I thought I must have missed something. Well I don't know... I don't like the art, the story is quite boring. Karen dies quickly, but Matt is happy...

There were a lot of things that bothered me about this story, but I think one of the biggest problems I had was with Foggy's non-reaction to Karen's death. I know he had his own problems (framed for murder, girlfriend leaving him), but this was still one of his best friends and the girl he once loved. I don't think he references it beyond "How was the funeral?"

after rereading the story, so many things didn't fall into place in the story.

Mysterio choose DD instead of spidey for his "swan song", because spidey let the role to scarlet spider, and then, at the end of the story, Peter Parker was there and try to comfort Matt after the loss of Karen... The true Spiderman returns (and was returned for a while) but Mysterio choose to stay with his replacement instead of his original choice. Clever and logical.

Speaking of Mysterio, why choosing Mysterio, a Spidey Villian who only fought DD once in a very minor story inspite of some DD villian with a grudge against him and who would have fit better ? (Larry Cranston or Killgrave, for exemple ?)

Karen told Matt she had AIDS, then Mysterio told Matt that "she should have had a second advice from another doctor" WTF, has she really AIDS or not ? ( and why hasn't Matt made a HIV test for himself, the first thing I would do if I was him ? )

The same stupidity occured with the children death in the hospital. Children are killed in the first issue. We all believe that the villian "Macchabes" was behind this but... No, it was just a coincidence, someone murder them and Mysterio took the opportunity to build his story ! And the death are still unexplained at the end. Very good writing (It's clear that Kevin Smith didn't know what he was doing here)

Very very bad writing here. I don't like fall from grace which has too much things happening at the same time and which isn't very emotional to me, but the story is coherent and Chichester knew where he went with the story. It isn't the same with guardian devil which is a bad "born again" knock off with the name "Kevin Smith" on the cover to be sure that the comic sell. Sad.

I agree that the AIDS thing was overboard. It was Smith trying to be too topical. I don't want AIDS in my comics. In fact I'd rather not think about AIDS as a central plot point of any comic. It's too heavy of an issue to just say "guess what, she's back...and she has AIIIIIDDDSSS!!!" Kind of reminds me of the "RENT" parody (called AIDS) from Team America. It just shoves the issue in your face.
The same could be said for teen pregnancy angle that was just tasteless and disturbing for a brightly colored action comic (I mean I know it's DD so it's noir, but in this instance it was just jarring). The girl watches her parents get killed then is hunted down, killed and buried in an unmarked grave? That is horrible, and if the book handled it like it was in fact horrible than it would be more forgivable, but instead it's just mentioned in passing as the villain monologues.
Also the baby deaths in the beginning were revealed to be just a coincidence? WTF! More tasteless violence.

I read this when I was fairly new to comics, so it seemed like an interesting read at the time, but the more I reread it and think aout it, the less I like it.
Does anyone else hate that Smith uses the word "cacophony: at least 3 times in the book? That's at least 2 times too much because no one talks like that. To make matters worse, he made a whole Batman mini (which was terrrible) called Batman: Cacophony!

I agree with some past users that yes the story is great and ambitious, it delivers quite an epic opening into DD vol.2 and brings us into an 'new' DD world. However once Vol.2 gets into full swing this story line except for the death of Karen is easily forgettable. I'm not too keen on the artwork and it really doesn't have a place in Vol.2 especially once you see the first issue with Maleev as penciller.

The artwork is too over the top and colourful, the colours too bold at times but it suits the very comic book story, the very kind of story that you only get in a comic. It was almost silver-age artwork with a contemporary down-an-dirty story.

The plot itself is often so obsessed with pushing idea after idea that it loses itself, and the reader may lose interest too if not for the enigma of the whole plot.

The pay-off is good in terms of adding to the DD mythology, but only in retrospect does the story really have any gravity (matt's mum, death of mysterio, death of karen) these things are important, but all together in one arc they don't have the impact.

Overall the book is decent, I give it a 3/5 in retrospect due to the amazing run later in Vol.2, as it is over-shadowed almost straight away by Mack's Echo arc.

I'm with you on this one. This is the book that got me into DareDevil.
