In Part 1 of World of Daredevil at Marvel.com, Waid makes, what I think, is quite the remarkable observation about Matt.
That he is addicted to tragedy. That because of all these tragic & sad events, Matt may subconsciously direct himself towards making such decisions & actions because that is what he believes his lot in life is all about.
Thus, the struggle for him is more about breaking this cycle of addiction, in trying to be more upbeat and positive and less about making self-destructive decisions. (Of course, Waid hints that for Matt, this will not be as easy as just plastering a smile on his face every day)

makes sense to me.. but I rather dont want to think of matt as a selfloathing emo kid. after all, he's a hero, and tragedy just comes with the job.. _________________ Deodorant Cant Fix Ugly. |

Not a bad way to go about it. It's a good way to take the book in a slightly different direction. Could make for some very interesting stories.
The more Waid talks about DD the happier I am that he's on board. You can tell it's not just another assignment for him and that he knows and cares about Matt. |

This isn't the newest idea going. Many writers have commented on DD's cycle of violence, tragedy both in the comic itself (I remember Foggy basically yelling this idea at Matt during Bendis' run) and in interviews (Nocenti talks about Matts attraction to "troubled women"). So it's not something Waid has come up with. On the other hand, by mentioning it I think Waid shows that he actually gets what makes DD interesting. _________________ JC

I think it's every new DD writer that are attracted to Matt having tragedy in his life. They are all trying to be Frank Miller and thus, they all want to tear down Matt and build him up again. *yawn*. The ONLY writer to write Matt different was D.G. Chichester. He didn't write Matt as a tragic figure. He wrote Matt as a man in control. A man with direction, instead of a victim of his circumstance. Too bad writes don't try that approach for a change. _________________ rgj |
