Quick question for you DD old timers: what DD stories are worth picking up which are not in TPB form?

I'm looking to get my hands on some back issues, but I really only want arcs which are worth my time and money. I don't really want to waste time and money on the the Surgeon General and the story where DD goes to France and gets his sight back.

Any suggestions?

Off the top of my head, Denny O'Neil's Micah Synn story is great. It was published in non-consecutive issues in the early 80s, so it would be great if it were collected. But you can find it in #202, 204, 206, 210-214.

Also, I also like going back and rereading J.M. DeMatteis' run (#344-350). Other people don't like this run as much as I do, though. But I think it brought him back from his miserable black, venetian blinds costume period.

I have to agree with the previous statement. Daredevil #344-#350 written by J.M DeMatteis are some of my personal favorites from the 90's as they offer an in depth analysis of Matt Murdock and Daredevil. i'd go as far as saying they among the best issues to come out of the 90's for DD after how weird Fall from Grace got. They're underrated for sure and to better understand who he is i definitely recommend picking them up. I remember reading them a few months ago and realized how unique and "contradicting" Matt is as a man. i'll be a vague as possible to avoid spoilers but it's another mid life crisis in which he begins to fracture.....again, expect alot of detailed caption boxes. Must read in my opinion.

O'Neil: I'm definitely willing to check these out. I don't know if I was necessarily a fan of Love's Labor's Lost, though. It could be simply an issue of context, but the stories in the trade don't really seem to appeal to me. as a "modern" reader. Mazzuchelli's art is fantastic, though.

For the sake of giving me some perspective, what was it about O'Neil's run that made these stories--Micah Synn, etc.--so good?

Kesel: It's actually Waid's current run that is sparking my interest in these stories. I first started reading DD as a kid during Miller's legendary run. By the time Nocenti was off and running, I got out of reading comics. When I started back up again, Bendis was in the back half of his run. In a nutshell, I've only really known the darker themes of the title. When I heard Waid was jumping on, I was a bit skeptical. I didn't think the titlle should have a lighter tone. So far, however, I love it. This is a fun time to be a DD fan! If the Kesel run is as half as fun as this, I will definitely pick those issues up.

DeMatteis: I remember reading on these message boards a while ago people trashing DeMatteis's run, so I always stayed away from these issues. It really only takes someone to give a heartfelt explanation as to why he/she enjoys a certain author, and it will spark my interest.

Finally, anything else I should be checking out? How about more Nocenti? I wasn't a huge fan of the Typhoid Mary trade, but I loved the Lone Stranger trade. great stuff! How was the back end of Nocenti's run? I know some author's tend to peter out at the end of their tenure.

It's too bad Marvel does not put together more TPBs for the DD title. Especially now that Waid's run is getting so much attention, this would be a great time to introduce some newer--or prodigal sons in my case--readers to some great stories of the past.
