I've recently been going through some DD back issues and have stumbled upon Roger Mckenzie's run. I'm only into his first three issues but have definitely noticed a few differences from all of the earlier DD writers. Before I read this I always thought of him as the failure DD writer that was so bad that Marvel let the artist take the book from him. Now, he might get worse, but I feel as if all of us DD fans owe him some gratitude. I always thought that Frank Miller made DD dark but Mckenzie definetly started veering DD in that direction. Not only did he give us Ben Urich but he was also the first one to give DD an emotional breakdown. He put DD in some of the worst situations possible. Now don't get me wrong, Frank Miller was much better, but don't you think we owe Roger Mckenzie some gratitude?

Also, whenever I looked him up online I could find close to nothing him. I couldn't even find the year he was born. Does anyone know why he completely went off the radar?

I agree that Roger McKenzie started bringing more darkness into the series, especially with the Deathstalker issues. I think he was a better writer than predecessors like Gerry Conway and Jim Shooter, but obviously the series wasn't selling well. Apparently Miller was unhappy with McKenzie's scripts, and after Denny O'Neil became the book's editor, he fired him, so Miller could write it. I think McKenzie was good enough, but he wasn't ever going to be the game changer that Miller would prove to be, and his reputation does suffer in comparison.

The only stuff of his I've read is that included in the Frank Miller Visionaries collection. I thought most of it was pretty good. There were a couple misses, but I really liked most of it.

I enjoyed his run of DD stories. We're they the best stuff ever written for the Daredevil comics? Definetly not, but I've read way worse stuff since then in the title. Wink

You'll be hearing more from Roger McKenzie soon, as he's involved with the Charlton comics relaunch as editor.

That's awesome Kuljit. Thanks. I always wondered what happened to him.
