The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

Just picked up the first volume or Image's Jack Staff reprints for half-off. I heard about it from reading the back columns of an issue of Casanova, by Fraction/Ba/Moon, where they were talking about Paul Grist the creator, and if you like that style of art, then this is pretty similar. Actually, there are many references to Miller's DD and Eisner's Spirit. I am really enjoying it and I would recommend it for anyone looking for something in the spirit of FM's early work, but with an obvious British tone to it. (the girl reporter in the series is named Becky Burdock )
Very cool British super hero series. |

Sadly, jack Staff is now finished (tho the character may return in the odd mini-series, apparently) but yeah, I pretty much echo your thoughts. Read JS right from the first issue and loved it right the way through. Probably because I was brought up reading the British weeklies it pays homage to.
Incidentally, the book has been replaced at Image by Grist's new series "Mud Man", another great British take on the superhero genre. Very reminiscent of strips like The Leopard From Lime Street or Billy the Cat but with the obvious modern twist. Give it a go, there's only been (iirc) 5 issues out so far.
Grist's cop series Kane is another that's worth a look, too. |
