If there is one thing that I like in Mark Waid's run, it's the way Matt now deal with his problems.
During the Bendis and Brubaker years, Matt was like a punching bag, always on the defensive, always manipulated, many times beaten by his ennemies.
In the Waid, run, on the other hand, Matt tries the best as he can to be proactive, to be a real hero.
He has as many problems, but he deals with them instead of being surrounded by them.
The last issue of the third volume is juste exactly that.
It symbolise what a man without fear truly is, and how much a fearless guy can inspire the others (the scene with Foggy is really great)
Before reading the issue, I feared that Matt would lose, that he would return in the dark "I am nothing, I have lost everything" area. Well, it's just the complete opposite. At the end of the story, Matt got rid of the only thing that put fear in him.
I has not be beaten, he has grown stronger.
Like Hank Pym said, it has changed everything, and I'm really curious to know what will happen in San Francisco.
4/5, really good issue |

The first three pages of the issue made me tear up. I can't remember the last time a comic did that and I've been into comics for about 18 years. |

It was a decent enough closer to volume 3.
I'm looking forward to the volume 4. |

I couldn't imagine a better issue for ending Volume 3 (even though I don't think we need to end the volume, but whatever...). From the heartwrenching scene between Matt and Foggy, to the conclusion that leaves you wondering, "How are they possibly going to make this work?", it's just great.
I have to type the following:
I've gone on record for a long time about how much I hated Bendis' time on the book, and I would like to submit Matt's testimony from this issue as Exhibit A. As Foggy said in the first few pages of this issue, Matt's integrity is his defining characteristic, and that is something that Bendis, tragically, did not understand. Suing the Globe for printing the truth was something that Matt would never do, and I love that Waid flat out said that this issue. You can try to rationalize it by saying he had to do what he could to protect his friends, but did he have to sue a newspaper to the point that it would cripple it? Kudos to Waid for bringing up this issue. And a raspberry to Bendis. |

the Smurfs are darker and grittier than this run! I swear I wanted to be like a guy in these boards who once said "I'll continue reading DD anyways because I've been doing it for so long" (Castle?), but to me this seems like the "perfect jump off point" (good job in starting a new series again, Marvel).
Really, I don't understand. Matt admitted being DD why exactly? Integrity? The Serpents blackmailing him? Give me a break. DD has been blackmailed for years by the friggin Kingpin and responded by eventually kicking his butt, and now he outs himself because he's threatened by a group of nameless flunkies? |

OMG!!!! That's exactly what I was thinking, The funny thing is DD and Luke Cage had this conversation in Bendis's run and DD explained to him why he couldn't do that because he'd be and rightfully so thrown in jail, law officials aren't that generous .This issue made no sense it's shock value at it's worst. imo.Sons of the Serpent give me a freaking break!!! |

The more I thought about it, the more I had problems with the issue and that's part of it.
That said, I'll continue reading. |

I gave it a three because I'm honestly kind of split. Not just on this issue, but the entire story arc.
I'm a returning reader. I haven't read in about ten years, and I picked up again right at the beginning of this story arc (my first current issue was the one with Silver Surfer). With that said, it feels weird an almost a little disappointing to come back to the comic after so long and have it immediately shake up the status quo in such a big way. That's just my own timing, though, so I won't hold it against the book as a whole.
I think my biggest problem with the recent issues is the same as one I saw addressed in another thread. The main villains here, the Sons of Serpent, are pretty much non-entities. They didn't do anything. They were just faceless mooks who had no real role. All of their threats were implied. There's a rule in writing that says "show, don't tell," a rule that Waid didn't really take into consideration as much as he should have.
There was nobody to root against, just some guys in bad costumes that Matt said did worse than we ever actually saw them doing. I loved the issue where Jester started the riot, but that was Jester's doing, not the Serpents. The only direct conflict with the group that really interested me was Matt's dealing with the wizard guy, and those two books weren't even that good in general. That means we're left with just a bunch of lame goons leading to a huge shake-up. They don't have cool costumes; they dress like dollar store knockoffs of the Great Saiyaman from Dragon Ball Z.
As far as this issue on its own, like I said, I'm split. I'm not thrilled about Matt revealing his identity, but the way he did it was very well done. His speech was excellent, and I really felt sympathetic and could see that he felt he was doing the right thing from a personal perspective, even if I didn't care for it from a story perspective. The rest wasn't that great. The thing with the judge being a serpent felt contrived, the action scene was pretty inconsequential, and the part where the DA promised Matt he'd go after the Serpents was rushed. The second half of the book just seemed like a way to force a conclusion to the storyline.
The art was pretty good in some places. I really liked the big I AM DAREDEVIL part with all of the other superheroes watching it on TV and commenting. The origin story montage panel was cool, too (did anyone notice the silhouette of Stick in the corner behind yellow DD?) I also loved the colors in the final scene with DD and Kirsten on the rooftop. The pink and blue really set the mood, and it looked very pretty.
So that's my $.02. Sorry to ramble on like that. You might find that I tend to do that. |

It's amazing to me how fast my enjoyment of the Waid run is starting to plummet. I think up until about issue 28 or 29 I was really loving things but since then not so much. The "Halloween Spectacular" issues we're pretty silly and the sons of the Serpent storyline seemed rushed and pretty anti climactic to me. #36 was also a big letdown for me. I can say I am really unhappy about Matt revealing his secret id to everyone. This is something I was never happy about being exposed even from the beginning (thanks Bendis) and really wanted it resolved after such a long time. This resolution? Definetly not what I wanted to see happen. Now he's been disbarred and is moving off to San Fransisco for a new life. This could be interesting or this could be really bad, I'll have to wait and see, but this really doesn't sound like something I want to see for him.
Also Samnee's simple cartoony artwork is getting on my nerves a lot. I really hope for a new artist soon. |

I didn't buy it when Bendis did it. Back then it seemed that everyone just kind of figured it out, and Matt just denied it, and crippled a quality newspaper simply for following a lead.
This time I'm finding it easier to buy, simply because no writer since Bendis has been able to properly put the genie back in the bottle, and also because the serpents had Matt over a barrel because of Foggy's delicate condition. I actually enjoyed the Serpents arc, because they so completely pervaded an institution in which Matt is deeply involved. And I found his actions on the witness stand very noble.
Having said that, once someone succeeds Waid as the writer, how are they going to handle the new reality? Who knows? |
